General Mills is on a mission to lead CPG in Data and Analytics - a critical part of our company's Accelerate strategy. GMI's Data Science team is the engine room of our Data and Analytics work and will be a major component of the Digital Transformation of the company. General Mills has invested heavily in a modern cloud-based tech stack and is committed to leveraging it to drive analytics use cases and financial impact. We are seeking to hire a Director, Data Science to help us achieve these outcomes. We will fill this role with a forward-thinking analytics, business, and people leader to help us advance our DS/AI/ML capabilities, improve, and scale up our current models, and drive data science work in new areas for the company. This leader will partner across tech and business teams to drive analytics and business acumen, analytics IP, analytics process standardization, and the continued scale up of our Data Science team to deliver on these goals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead large and growing global Data Science team (including managers of people) across multiple domains
  • Partner across the Digital & Technology organization to develop new Data Science and Analytics strategies that will drive business performance and outcomes. Understand current and keep pulse on new DS/AI/ML techniques and trends via external connections and benchmarking to establish CPG leadership for GMI where and how it matters - and lead General Mills Advanced Analytics Practice Community
  • Lead Data Science team structure evolution, process development, training, and Ways of Working to drive continued increases in effectiveness, efficiency, and personal development of team members
  • Create and sustain a culture that fosters diversity and inclusion. Mentor Data Scientists and Data Science Managers - encourage their professional growth and development
  • Understand business strategies and problems, translate to Data Science approaches, select / run / validate Analytics, and drive understanding and action from model insights across all levels of organization - tech teams, business teams, senior management. Lead team to deliver Data Science and Analytics initiatives successfully
  • Lead large team balancing multiple complex projects delivering to many stakeholders - effectively prioritize initiatives and resources to maximize value
  • Partner effectively with and manage external / third parties to deliver DS/AI/ML projects and integrate them into internal GMI projects and systems

Role difference relative to other transformational roles in the company

This role is one of the most complex and important roles that we will hire within the Data & Technology team. We are seeking next level leadership in multiple areas - deep Data Science and Analytics expertise, modern cloud-based technology skills, people development / leadership, process leadership and more. In addition, the external environment for recruiting in the Data Science space is highly competitive at present

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 10+ years of experience leading and scaling Data Science teams
  • Master's Degree or Ph.D in a highly quantitative field (Statistics, Math, Operations Research, or Physics
  • Demonstrated ability to drive Data Science Analytics and models through to business impact
  • Prior experience utilizing Cloud AI/ML/MLOps tools, preferably Google; hunger to keep up with AI/ML technology and business trends
  • Experience leading individuals and teams working in agile product development cycles
  • Experience with one or more data science/analytics programming languages (i.e R, Python, Spark, or Scala]) is highly valued
  • A solid understanding of statistical analysis, experimentation, and the common pitfalls of data analysis
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms
  • Critical thinker that is able to use available evidence to make decisions
  • Passion for data, technology, driving change, and spreading Data Science knowledge
  • Ability to translate data science capabilities to business insights to improve outcomes
  • Ability to define large ambiguous problems, select appropriate analytic approaches, drive to output, and scale solutions rapidly across domains and businesses
  • Ability to articulate a vision that inspires direct reports / indirect reports / stakeholders, communicate clearly and effectively with both technical and non-technical senior leaders
  • Collaboration, partnership, and leadership skills - directly lead and indirectly influence global cross-functional teams to drive to effective outcomes in dynamic environment
