C5 Youth Foundation of Southern California is a five-year leadership development program. C5LA recruits high-potential, under-resourced youth of Los Angeles. The program provides resources, support, opportunities and experiences that enable participants to realize their potential so they may actively seek higher education and grow into tomorrow’s leaders as well as "make a difference" adults. In addition to year-round continuous development, C5LA conducts four summer experiences that develop participants to be character driven, challenge ready, college bound, community focused and committed to a better future.

The first year experience is at Camp Paintrock in Hyattville, Wyoming where in-coming freshmen travel far from home and far out of their comfort zones. At camp students gain new experiences, and learn leadership skills through high adventure activities including, horseback riding, rappelling, camping and aquatic activities. The program was developed to give our students an opportunity to experience the fun, excitement, skills and lifelong memories that come with the "camp experience".

Camp kitchen staff is responsible for preparing regular meals, preparing meal-plans for off-site activities and maintaining clean, sanitary and operational kitchen and dining facilitates. Lead and Assistant Chef have regular and special meal-prep assignments and are expected to be able to perform in highly active and demanding roles indicative of summer camp environment. Duties include:

• Manage/Assist in preparation of three meals a day for fifty+ people

• Manage/Assist in food and kitchen inventory/ordering supplies

• Set up kitchen and dining facilities before students and seasonal staff arrive and close down camp after students and seasonal staff depart

• Ensure the kitchen and dining facilities are clean, safe, sanitary and in working order

• Build menu and conduct meal planning

• Maintain all health, food storage/handling, and sanitation standards including regular documentation of cold storage temperatures

• Assist with other duties and special projects as needed

Qualifications include:

• Documented training and experience in kitchen operations and cooking

• ServSafe and Food-Handler Certifications (or any kitchen related certification)

• At least 18 years of age

• Skill in communication both verbally and written, and able to listen and write clearly and analytically

• Ability to accept supervision and guidance under flexible circumstances and prioritize tasks from a pool of multiple responsibilities

• Good show of character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control

• Strong capability to live away from home for an extended period (on-site staff training, two four-week sessions) and maintain mental and emotional presence

• Physical ability and stamina to fulfill specific responsibilities in outdoor summer camp environment (including tasks such as lifting and transporting equipment, high-volume food output)

• Culturally aware/sensitive and able to work with and lead diverse teams and individuals

Camp Paintrock runs May 28th to August 19th. In addition to pay for the summer season, C5LA provides flights, meals, room and board. Online application can be found on our website at www.c5la.org/seasonal-staff
