Background

Montana Academy has an opening for a full-time math teacher. Montana Academy is a therapeutic boarding school for highly talented and bright troubled teenagers. The school is located on a 500-acre ranch about 40 miles west of Kalispell. We have between 30-50 high school students who have come to us because of their history of school failure and general immaturity. Montana Academy operates on a year-around block schedule in a program that interweaves an emotional growth-therapeutic component with a fully accredited high school. Our teachers provide highly engaging, student-centered instruction in all of the major content areas in well-equipped classrooms serving small class sizes. Job Description

Primary roles: A teacher at Montana Academy is responsible for teaching four sections of the teacher’s discipline (or teaching three sections and supervising a daily study hall). In addition, each teacher is assigned to one of seven teams and participates, under the direction of that team’s therapist, in the delivery of the treatment plan for each student on that team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a classroom teacher, this individual:

Prepares course curricula, course descriptions, course binders suitable for accreditation review, classroom inventories, and peer mentoring observations as part of yearly review and assessment processes.

For our specific math curricula, we prefer candidates proficient in teaching math courses including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus

Completes and distributes grades and comments in a timely way.

Assists in the development of academic policies and procedures through consultation with colleagues and under the direction of the Principal.

Serves, on a rotating basis, as the facilitator of weekly faculty

meetings.

Is responsible, on a rotating basis, for coverage of morning community meetings.

Collaborates to provide coverage for classes when a colleague is ill or indisposed.

Seeks appropriate professional development activities with the advice and support of the Principal.

As a team teacher, this individual:

Prepares an Academic Intake Report for newly arrived students on the team.

Reviews regularly each team member’s academic history and projected course plan to ensure that each student remains on track to complete graduation requirements.

Shepherds each team member through the academic experience at MA.

Serves as liaison between faculty colleagues and the treatment team.

Supports the application process for each team member’s next step in schooling, including obtaining recommendations, editing application essays, and encouraging the timely completion of application forms. (Note: teachers are not school placement counselors; that specific task belongs to parents or to consultants retained by the parents.)

Additional Information

State of Montana teaching certification required.

Montana Academy is a year-round school, but teachers have a six-week vacation occurring at some point during the year with four additional weeks of Paid Time Off (PTO), for a total of ten weeks of paid vacation.
