Clinical partners include Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, University Hospital in Newark, and other affiliates.Through this community of healers, scientists, and scholars, Rutgers is equipped as never before to transform lives.Rutgers RBHS is an anchor institution that boasts locations in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise.Posting SummaryRutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist V for the Department of Medicine – Infectious Diseases/Center for Emerging and Re-Emerging Pathogens. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Teaching Specialist V conducts research activities in microbiology within a specialized biosafety level three (BSL3) containment laboratory as well as rodent infection experiments, assist in managing BSL3 laboratories.

Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria including M. Tuberculosis, and Select Agents

requiring work in BSL3 facilities including drug resistant strains.

Conducts validation studies of molecular detection and drug resistance assays.

Performs detailed MICs of M. tuberculosis using MGIT, Echo acoustic, Hamilton robotics and other systems.

Performs DNA, RNA extraction, Sanger and next generation sequencing and analysis.

Conducts PCR, cloning, protein expression studies in E. coli, M. tuberculosis and other systems.

Catalogs and maintains libraries of anti-tubercular compounds.

Assists in the development and testing of new assays including primer and molecular probe design.

Assists in managing the BSL3 environment and responsible for organizing laboratory to increase efficiency.

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science.

BSL3 experience working with virulent CDC classified tier 1 select agents and M. tuberculosis.

Experience with M. tuberculosis microbiological assays.

Experience in Gene cloning, expression and protein purification.

Preferred Qualifications

One (1) year of related research experience preferred.

Experience in molecular beacon design/ molecular biological techniques preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds. Must be able to work 8 hour shifts wearing protective clothing and equipment in BSL3 facility
