Key responsibilities include performing daily vehicle inspections, planning routes, adhering to traffic and safety regulations, securing cargo, and completing necessary paperwork like logbooks and trip tickets. Some roles may also involve loading and unloading cargo, and all drivers need a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Core responsibilities
Vehicle operation and maintenance: Safely operate medium-duty vehicles such as box trucks, vans, and stake trucks. Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to check for any maintenance issues, and report them to a supervisor.
Logistics and planning: Plan routes to ensure timely and efficient deliveries. Use GPS and other navigation systems to find the best routes.
Cargo management: Securely load and unload cargo, ensuring it is safe during transport. Some roles may involve transporting specific goods, such as livestock, which requires monitoring their condition during the trip.
Documentation: Complete and maintain accurate records for mileage, fuel, and trip tickets. This includes logging all working hours to comply with regulations.
Adherence to regulations: Follow all federal, state, and company safety regulations, including speed limits, break requirements, and weight restrictions.
Communication: Communicate effectively with dispatchers, customers, and other team members.
Requirements and qualifications
Commercial Driver's License (CDL): A valid CDL with the appropriate class and any necessary endorsements is required.
Clean driving record: A clean driving record with no recent major accidents or violations is typically expected.
Experience: Previous experience as a truck driver is often required, though it can vary by position.
Physical fitness: Ability to lift and move heavy items as needed.
Attention to detail: Strong organizational skills are needed for managing paperwork and logs.
Flexibility: A willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is often necessary.
The ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening
Excellent Pay depending on experience; Home at night and some weekends required.
