The Dental Assistant, working under the supervision of a dentist, is responsible for a large number of supporting duties that range from patient care, to laboratory functions, to administration. This position calls out for the greatest flexibility and variation in terms of technical skills, clinical knowledge and experience, and administrative expertise. In addition to these essential attributes, the Dental Assistant must have exceptional interpersonal skills and a sincerely caring and helpful attitude toward other members of the dental staff and our patients. Although the dentist is the specialist, the Dental Assistant sets the tone within our office, which is a key consideration for our clientele. The ideal Dental Assistant will have a genuine helpful, friendly, and professional demeanor.
The following is a representative list of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position:
Perform chair-side duties by acting as the dentist's 'third hand'
Sterilize, organize, and arrange dental instruments and equipment in preparation for each patient
Take x-rays of patients' teeth
Collect and record patients' health history
Access and document patient's dental records
Make impressions of patients' teeth
Mix compounds for cleaning and/or filling teeth
Use suction and swabs to keep patients' mouths clear and dry during various procedures
Apply topical anesthetic to patients' mouths
Schedule appointments, maintain records, send bills, answer phones, order supplies and other related office tasks
In addition to these core responsibilities, the Dental Assistant may be called upon to perform expanded duties such as:
Remove stitches
Place and remove rubber dams, matrices and wedges
Apply cavity liners and bases
Place and finish composite resin restorations, including sealant material
Must have GREAT chair-side manner and ability to build excellent rapport with patients
Must have passion, ambition and a LOVE for dentistry with proven leadership skills
Expanded Functions desired (and compensated for), but NOT REQUIRED
