Vacancy expired!

What You Will DoThe Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory invites outstanding applicants for postdoctoral positions in the Advanced Imaging team of the Dynamic Imaging and Radiography group (P-1). The Advanced Imaging team studies a wide range of physics in support of national security, requiring the continuous advancement, development and application of new imaging techniques. Currently, the team is leading the world in neutron and gamma imaging of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The team is the sole provider of nuclear imaging data at the world’s most powerful laser ICF facility – the National Ignition Facility (NIF) – striving to diagnose burn and understanding the performance-degrading mechanism of mix through 3D neutron tomography of implosions. The team is now working to help understand the factors that led to the recent major achievement of ignition, and in adapting the imaging system and analysis techniques towards acquiring data in a new regime of a burning plasma in the laboratory. This work is ultimately in service of the goals of the DOE and the needs of the nation, in working on Stockpile Stewardship as well as towards the development of a new form of clean energy. As a member of the team, the postdoctoral scientist will be responsible for analyzing experimental data, maintaining and developing computational tools for image analysis and simulations. These activities will support a wide range of projects, including neutron imaging at the National Ignition Facility, the OMEGA laser facility, the Nevada National Security Site, and LANSCE.The LANL Postdoctoral Program is a pipeline for hiring technical staff at the Laboratory, many of whom first joined LANL as postdocs. The Laboratory encourages its postdoc mentors to help their postdocs explore possibilities for conversion to a permanent staff position. The successful candidate will:Develop and implement ideas with minimal supervision to ensure capability maintenance and growth in the field of advanced neutron and gamma imaging

Design measurements to answer scientific questions for a wide range of applications

Analyze experimental data obtained at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and extract meaningful physics results

Develop new computational tools for image analysis and simulations

Present results at international conferences and write papers for peer‐reviewed publications

What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Strong programming skills

Demonstrated expertise with data analysis

Demonstrated ability in meeting scheduled deliverables and bringing projects to completion

A strong sense of curiosity, and a willingness to develop new skills called for by a research task

Demonstrated expertise in working independently as well as within a diverse team environment

Strong verbal and written communication skills

A record of publishing results through peer reviewed publications and presentations

Education/Experience : A Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Medical Physics or a related field. Degree is completed within the past five years, or soon to be completed.Desired Qualifications:Demonstrated expertise in nuclear or plasma physics research

Demonstrated programming skills in MATLAB, Python, C, or C Experience carrying out experiments at large physics facilities with formal operations (NIF, OMEGA, LANSCE especially, but also facilities such as SLAC, APS, BNL, JLab, TUNL, etc.)

Experience with machine learning

Experience in diagnostic development, preferably for fusion research

Experience with particle transport simulation programs (MCNP, Geant4, TOPAS)

Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship
