Job Description Type of Opportunity: Full Time FTE: 0.900000 Exempt: No Work Schedule: Varied Days and Hours Summary:Directs and manages patient care and hospital operations in the absence of Department Directors and Administrator on the evening, nights, and weekend shifts Responsibilities:Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the delivery of patient care hospital-wide for an assigned shift.Acts as clinical resource by overseeing the delivery of patient care, directs and delegates patient care assignments to nursing staff working on the units based on acuteness of patient care needs and staff capability and anticipates future needs. Maintains clinically competent in providing direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.Coordinates patients care through collaboration with the patient/family and other specialists of the healthcare team. Acts as multi-diciplinary liaison between the nursing department and ancillaries. Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families and staff in accordance with hospital standards. Remains sensitive to spiritual and specific cultural patient needs, recognizes them and incorporates values into plan of care.Assists with locating equipment, relieving staff as necessary, providing medications to nursing units after pharmacy is gone, ensures adequate staffing levels and schedules OR cases. Assures that medications and treatments are administered as prescribed by physician, clinical path or standard protocols.Assists physicians with various procedures, treatments, surgical techniques or delegate/assign to other healthcare team members as appropriate. Delegates or assigns aspects of care to healthcare team members consistent with their role and responsibilities.Effectively communicates with and assists other members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines. Actively participates in problem-solving and conflict resolution to maintain team cohesiveness. Demonstrates ability to assist others in resolving interpersonnel conflicts. Supports and maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.Participates in educational programs, self-management activities, current literature, inservice meetings and workshops. Acts in the role of nurse educator for staff, patients and families on medication, equipment, treatment, modalities and resources for inpatient care and discharge into community. Assists with the implementation of the changes as recommended by the committees. Assists in orientation of new staff or students.Knowledgeable and participates in planning the nursing unit budget and assures quality patient care is delivered in a cost effective manner.
