Swan St. City Albany State NY Zip Code 12224 Minimum Qualifications The candidate should possess a Juris Doctor degree; admission to, or willingness to seek admission to, the New York State Bar; and four years of experience in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar.The ideal candidate will have 10 or more years’ experience in criminal defense appellate and post-conviction practice; a commitment to improving mandated representation statewide; and a collegial and collaborative approach to project management. Experience in appellate representation in Family Court matters is also desirable. Duties Description The New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services (ILS) seeks an attorney to fill the newly created position of Senior Appellate Attorney. This attorney will collaborate closely with the ILS Director of Quality Enhancement for Appellate and Post-Conviction Representation in launching, promoting, and running an ILS Statewide Appellate Center in Albany, New York. The Center will help fulfill the agency’s statutory mission to “make efforts to improve the quality of services provided pursuant to article 18-B of the county law” and its vision for an innovative appellate resource office for attorneys providing mandated criminal defense statewide.The Director and Senior Appellate Attorney will work as a team with four other attorneys to be hired in creating statewide initiatives, developing training webinars, and providing individual consultation services to improve mandated criminal defense appellate representation, including for direct appeals and CPL 440.10 motions and other post-conviction matters. In addition, Center attorneys will provide litigation support to attorneys handling plea proceedings, criminal trials, and sentencing proceedings to help protect the appellate rights of criminal defendants.
