OverviewDevelopmental Disabilities Institute, DDI, is one of the largest providers of care to children and adults with Autism, developmental disabilities and other special needs. DDI has been a part of Long Island for over 50 years serving over 1,500 children and adults with Autism, other developmental disabilities and special needs. DDI provides innovative and expansive services to our population through various residential services, day habilitation programs and vocational services.Instructors play an important part in the lives of our individuals. Instructors working in our community based adult day programs will assistindividuals in all aspects of daily living including personal hygiene, cooking, house cleaning, laundry, leading a healthy lifestyle, shopping, budgeting, maintaining appropriate behavior, and community integration. Instructors work in avariety of settings in the local community providing supports as they teach age appropriate life skills necessary to be a member of the community.Responsibilities

Helping individuals build and maintain relationships with family and friends.

Following individuals daily activity/classroom schedule, implementing all formal goals and protocols of individuals you are assigned to.

Fulfilling responsibilities of primary advocate (paperwork, advocacy, programming).

Teaching and assisting individuals in all aspects of daily living, including, but not limited to: ADL’s (toileting, showering, personal hygiene), cooking, house cleaning, laundry, leading a healthy lifestyle, shopping, budgeting, maintaining appropriate behavior, and community integration.

Accompanying individuals on medical appointments, jobs, and community activities, if applicable.

Knowledge and accurate implementation of emergency procedures

Advocating for individuals’ needs.

Documentation, i.e., chore chart, incident reports, SUB sheets, logs, staff communication book.

Obtain and maintain appropriate certifications such as CPR.

Qualifications

A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency required

Some college preferred

Experience working with developmentally disabled population preferred

Valid NYS driver’s license required 18+ months

Obtain and maintain SCIP (Strategies for Crisis Intervention Prevention) Certification, CPR, First aid and other certifications as required
