Position: Domestic Violence Advocate

Salary: Full time $16.18/hr with generous benefits

After Hours On Call Requirement:

Must be able to respond in person to Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, NY within 45 minutes

Our progressive social service agency seeks a Domestic Violence Advocate, who will provide emotional support and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence Advocate will work collaboratively with the Tompkins County Department of Social Services (DSS) Child Protective Services unit in providing advocacy and support services to victims of domestic violence and their children. As a member of the Advocacy Center’s client services team, the advocate will provide emotional support and advocacy services to domestic violence and other agency clients and will also co-facilitate support groups. This position will be co-located at DSS.

The Domestic Violence Advocate provides systems advocacy on behalf of the survivor and accompanies them to meetings with law enforcement, prosecutors, and caseworkers, and to court. They attend bi-monthly domestic violence multidisciplinary team meetings with prosecutors, probation, mental health and child protection and also participate in the Integrated Domestic Violence Court.

Participation in a paid rotation of after-hours on-call (weeknight, weekend, and holiday), with other client services staff is required. After-hours on-call involves responding to calls on our 24 hour hotline from community members or professionals who need help regarding sexual assault, child sexual abuse and domestic violence.

The Advocacy Center of Tompkins County www.actompkins.org, located in Ithaca, NY, is an organization whose roots are based in feminism, social change, and victim rights. We have provided services to survivors of domestic violence since 1977, child sexual abuse since 1982 and adult sexual assault since 2003.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

One year of counseling or advocacy experience in a human services setting

Ability to develop a positive compassionate rapport with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault

Ability to work independently as well as in a team, with a willingness to appreciate different points of view and problem solve in a constructive manner.

Sensitive to the impact of sexual and domestic violence in diverse and marginalized communities and the ability to articulate these concerns in a sensitive and respectful manner

Commitment to social justice issues

Good communication, organizational and time management skills

Ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships

Flexible schedule

Valid NYS driver’s license, clean driving record, and use of car

Desired

BA in social work or related field desired. Equivalent professional experience considered.

Working knowledge of domestic violence, child sexual abuse, sexual assault and community & legal systems

Bilingual / bicultural candidates strongly encouraged to apply
