The Discovery Trail is located in Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University. We are a dynamic collaboration of seven museums and a public library that is unique worldwide. Our goal is for every resident of Tompkins County to become an engaged world citizen and ambassador for learning at any age. From the earliest years, we encourage every person to nurture their curiosity, learn to approach issues from different angles, and expand their world view.

Our flagship program, Kids Discover the Trail!, provides field experiences for most of Tompkins Countys 5,600 elementary students at all eight sites of the Discovery Trail.

The Discovery Trail is seeking an energetic individual to serve as Executive Director (ED) who will provide vision, leadership, and administration for the two primary activities of the Discovery Trail: 1) educational outreach with local schools, mainly through the Kids Discover the Trail! program, and 2) developing new countywide educational programming to expand our reach and impact. The ED will be the primary relationship builder who leverages the capacity of member organizations to accomplish the mission of the Discovery Trail.

The ED will report to the Discovery Trails Board of Directors. The successful candidate will have a bachelors degree (higher degree preferred); excellent written and oral skills; excellent judgement and demonstrated people skills; strong initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively; and ability to multi-task and work with a wide variety of people, set priorities, and meet deadlines. About the Discovery Trail: The Discovery Trail, now in its 20th year, is a group of eight educational organizations in Ithaca, NY (Cayuga Nature Center, Cornell Botanic Gardens, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell, Museum of the Earth at PRI, Sciencenter, The History Center of Tompkins County, and Tompkins County Public Library). The only collaboration of its kind, the Discovery Trail promotes curiosity, awareness and understanding of the connections among art, history, literature, science, and the natural world.

About Kids Discover the Trail!: Kids Discover the Trail! is the Discovery Trails flagship program. It provides elementary students equal access to a sequence of exciting annual field studies at the eight Discovery Trail organizations. KDT! began in 2004 as a pilot program through a collaboration between Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI), the Discovery Trail and the Ithaca City School District. Now in its 15th year, KDT! has provided 46,000 student field experiences. The Discovery Trails goal is to expand this educational opportunity to all elementary students in Tompkins County.
