Farm Sanctuary’s Watkins Glen Sanctuary is home to approximately 675 farm animals rescued from abuse and neglect, including many from large and small animal agricultural operations. At Farm Sanctuary they are given refuge, rehabilitation, and personalized care. The Facilities Maintenance team is a crucial, valued part of Farm Sanctuary’s staff who are tasked with ensuring our Sanctuary residents have safe and healthy living environments on our 275-acre site. The Sanctuary Facilities Maintenance Manager is responsible for the upkeep of 64 buildings, 17 vehicles, and 23 pieces of farm equipment and supervises up to four staff.

Responsibilities:

- Oversees facilities maintenance team, which includes up to four facilities staff. Manages hiring, performance management, and scheduling. Identifies and manages training opportunities.

- Manages Maintenance projects, including ensuring adherence to budget and organization deadlines, evaluating - - Maintenance and project needs, coordinating research as needed, and implementing improvements/changes as approved by the Director. Completes project reporting. Manages external contractor and vendor appointments and relationships as part of projects or as assigned.

- Assesses and makes recommendations for preventative and reactive Maintenance in the following areas: Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Equipment, Vehicles, Buildings, Wells/Water Systems.

- Manages and prioritizes requests from all departments for maintenance and project work.

- Supports the Director on overall farm management (e.g. mowing and snow removal, implementation of safety programs, animal movement and transport) and leads projects as assigned

- Lead and ensure the successful completion of facilities projects in the following areas, with advice from Director as needed:

Building and Home Maintenance

Equipment Maintenance

Plumbing, electrical, and HVAC system maintenance

Fencing and gates

Supply Orders

Construction Projects

Land management

- Manages the water system, including all reporting and correspondence with the Department of Health.

- Maintains building and equipment safety standards as determined by the organization.

- Coordinates with supervisor, Director of Shelter Operations, and/or the Chief Operating Officer on other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Project management experience, including comfort with or a willingness to learn computerized maintenance and project management software.

- Minimum five years of hands-on experience with general maintenance (e.g. building and home repair, fencing, large farm equipment maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, electric) required.

- Experience operating large equipment and power tools required. Experience with tractors and farm equipment as well as the ability to drive trucks with trailers preferred.

- 1-3 years of experience managing staff with a variety of skills and backgrounds, 3-5 years preferred

- Flexibility and aptitude as a self-starter and independent worker, with a strong inclination toward partnership and communication with supervisor. Ability to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented.

- Reliable and dependable, with flexibility and willingness to adjust the schedule when needed

- Team player; able to work well with a variety of people

- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; to bend, lift and climb to perform strenuous physical labor and lifting; and to sustain prolonged periods of standing and walking

- Comfort with working in sanctuary setting near all species in Farm Sanctuary’s care, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese

- Land use management/site planning experience beneficial

Job Specifications:

- Full-time exempt position located at our Watkins Glen, New York sanctuary

- Weekend and holiday availability required

- On-call shifts required

- Occasional travel, including overnight trips, required
