High-School SPED Teacher

About Us:

New Dawn Charter High School is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for over-aged and under-credited students aged 16 to 21, including English Language Learners and students with special needs. Our mission is to empower these students to return to school and achieve their high school diploma through a rigorous educational program aligned with New York State Education Department (NYSED) standards.

Position: High School Special Education (SPED) Teacher

Responsibilities:

- Collaborate with general education teachers to develop differentiated lesson plans that cater to students' varying abilities.

- Create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student, regularly assess their progress, and track their development.

- Provide necessary resources and support to all students within the co-taught classroom.

- Prepare teacher reports and actively participate in annual and triennial review meetings for the Committee on Special Education.

- Demonstrate a solid understanding of New York State Common Core/Next Generation Standards for high school education.

- Maintain ongoing communication with students' families, keeping them informed of student progress.

- Deliver instruction for one class per day, in addition to co-taught classes as assigned by administration.

- Facilitate Regents exams for students with IEPs, ensuring adherence to their testing accommodations.

- Adhere to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) regulations and mandates.

- Participate in regularly scheduled professional development sessions.

- Utilize data-driven insights to inform instructional decisions.

- Foster positive student relationships and contribute to enhancing the school's overall culture.

- Mentor a small group of students as part of the school's mentoring program, conducting regular check-ins and maintaining contact with their families.

- Take responsibility for contacting assigned mentees and tracking student attendance.

- Collaborate effectively with school staff, faculty, and administration, reporting directly to the Director of Student Support Services or the Special Education Coordinator.

- Dedicate your utmost efforts and loyalty to fulfilling assigned duties as directed by the School Principal.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field (advanced degree in education is a plus).

- New York State Certified Teacher.

- A minimum of 2 years of teaching experience, with prior urban teaching experience being advantageous.

- Demonstrated commitment to ensuring academic success for all students.

- Excellent teamwork, work ethic, and organizational skills.

- Effective oral and written communication skills in English.

- Exemplify integrity, a compassionate demeanor, strong moral character, and a proactive attitude.

- Proficiency in using technology for word processing, data management, and information retrieval.

- Dedication to continuous professional development.

- Willingness to undergo background checks as required by the New York State Department of Education.
