The Center for Climate Systems Research in the Climate School at Columbia University invites applicants for an Associate Research Scientist. This appointment is full-time and located at the Columbia University Morningside campus in New York City.The Associate Research Scientist will focus on interactions between atmospheric chemistry and climate, with an emphasis on changes in air pollution and atmospheric oxidation on timescales of hours to millennia, as well as impacts on climate, resources, and human health. The Associate Research Scientist will develop and use the GISS global climate model to build predictive ability of chemistry-climate interactions, with a focus on the roles of key processes like transport, natural emissions, and deposition to oceans, ice, and vegetation, in addition to anthropogenic emissions. The Associate Research Scientist will be expected to perform original research, present the results of the research at scientific meetings, and publish first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals.The Associate Research Scientist should have extensive expertise in the development of a hierarchy of geophysical models, advanced understanding of multiscale observations of the abundances and fluxes of reactive trace gases and aerosols available to evaluate models, and a willingness to lead chemical mechanism and model parameterization development in the GISS global climate model. Applicants should have established experience leading high-impact multidisciplinary research, demonstrated a record of significant research contributions through publications in peer-reviewed journals and success in raising external funding for research, and be able to contribute broadly to research at CCSR and GISS. Successful applicants must possess a PhD in atmospheric science or a similar field and have at least 3 years of post-PhD related experience.
At least 5 years of experience working with model and observational data in an academic or modeling group setting.
Strong communication, technical, and leadership skills.
Strong programming skills in Fortran and languages for processing and visualization.
