OverviewSMBC is seeking an Equity Research Associate to support the Senior Equity Research Analyst’s healthcare coverage, with a focus on small-mid cap biotech companies. This is a unique opportunity to join a new team building out its coverage universe and you will be afforded a high degree of responsibility. The position is ideal for someone with a life sciences background who has an interest in public markets and biotech investing. In this role, you will assist the Senior Analyst in all aspects of the research process, including research reports, financial models, primary/secondary research activities, marketing materials, and communication with institutional investor clients, internal sales and trading, and corporates.ResponsibilitiesAble to quickly learn and adapt to new processes and systems. Works well in a culturally diverse and team oriented environment. Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and an interest in continuous learning.

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, ability to synthesize large amounts of information, analyze risk and identify mitigating factors.

Self-driven and motivated; takes personal ownership of specific assignments.

Highly collaborative and flexible in a team and client environment and ability to form good relationships internally and externally. Able to coordinate and communicate with various internal departments across the bank (middle/back office, global counterparts.)

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Prior biotech/pharma equity research experience (sell-side or buy-side) is highly desirable.

Demonstrates a high degree of attention to detail and an ability to complete work accurately and in a timely manner against strict deadlines. Candidate is expected to be adaptable, managing changing priorities and have the ability to work well under pressure while multi-tasking.

Minimum BA/BS degree (life sciences-related or finance/economics with demonstrated interest in life sciences.)

Track record of outstanding academic performance (e.g., GPA, standadized test scores, academic awards)

Familiarity with Bloomberg and /or FactSet, along with IMS/IQVIA and/or Symphony to track drug prescriptions a plus
