Job Summary
The Custodian plays a critical role in supporting the health, safety, and cleanliness of the Head Start Program
facility. This position ensures that classrooms, restrooms, common areas, and outdoor spaces are maintained to
DOE standards, creating a safe and nurturing environment for young children, staff, and families.
Key Responsibilities
Perform daily cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and shared spaces
Disinfect high-touch surfaces and maintain hygiene protocols in accordance with DOE and Head Start
guidelines
Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors; remove trash and recyclables
Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisor when restocking is needed
Support setup and breakdown for classroom activities, parent meetings, and special events
Ensure outdoor play areas are clean, safe, and free of hazards
Perform minor repairs and report maintenance issues to the building manager
Assist with seasonal tasks such as snow removal, salting walkways, and pest control measures
Assist with keeping the grounds of the school aesthetically appealing
Follow DOE safety procedures and contribute to emergency preparedness efforts
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a child-centered environment
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Prior custodial experience in an early childhood or school setting strongly preferred
Familiarity with DOE sanitation standards and Head Start health regulations
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks for extended periods
Strong attention to detail, reliability, and time management
Must pass NYC DOE background check and fingerprinting requirements
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus, especially for family-facing interactions
Work Schedule
Monday–Friday, Shift Hours, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
