    Position Summary:

    Cardozo Law School, a leader in teaching and scholarship, is seeking a new Director of its library. The Associate Dean for Library Services serves on the law school dean's senior leadership team. The Associate Dean for Library Services provides the vision and organizational ability to ensure that the law library supports the mission and needs of the law school community providing the highest levels of service to students and faculty. They will partner with faculty and administrative colleagues to enhance the educational and scholarly reputation of the law school. They will collaborate with the Director of Legal Writing to develop and implement training and curriculum teaching legal research skills. In addition, they will be responsible for coordinating with the university's Information Technology office to provide support for synchronous and asynchronous remote education.



    The Associate Dean will also hold a faculty title (Professor of Legal Research).



    Position Responsibilities:
    Administrative and Operational Responsibilities:


  • Ensures the law library is staffed appropriately (staff of roughly 15), organized, and managed in an efficient and productive manner and models a collaborative and collegial culture.
  • Promotes and creates professional development opportunities for library staff, particularly around technology, project management and communication

  • Oversees the law library budget and works closely with the Finance team on strategic planning related to classroom technology and library facilities

    Collection Development and the Institutional Repository:


  • Maintains and enhances the collection development policy for the law library to ensure a collection of print and digital resources that support the educational and scholarly needs of the law school
  • Oversees the institutional repository, with an emphasis on the digital collection and digitization projects, to preserve and make accessible the history of the law school

  • Creates and implements a plan for the non-digital resources. Fosters relationships with the University Archives and Institutional Advancement to seek collaborations and funding for unique collections, especially related to Justice Cardozo and institutional milestones

  • Actively maintains relations with external organizations and libraries to promote collaborative collection development and preservation

    Reference, Research, and Scholarly Services:


  • Ensures an outstanding, broadly conceived approach to research and scholarly services, keeping in mind faculty, students, staff, and departmental needs. Regularly evaluates services and resource deployment
  • Develops and implements additional services to assist faculty in the creation of scholarship, from books and articles to editorials and podcasts, and scholarly profiles

  • Creates, implements and manages the 1L Legal Research training program in collaboration with the Lawyering and Legal Writing department

    Audio/Visual, Educational Technology, and Media Services:


  • Oversees audio/visual services department which provides high quality support of classroom instruction, meetings, and events taking place at the law school
  • Works closely with the Finance team and Information Technology Services on strategic planning related to classroom technology

  • In collaboration with the Assoc Director of Audiovisual and Media Services and other law school staff and faculty, envisions and develops a plan for media services spaces and support

    Faculty Appointment and Instructional Activities:


  • As a member of the faculty, attends and participates in faculty meetings and events. Serves on law school and university committees, as assigned.



    Experience & Educational Background:

  • J.D from an ABA accredited law school and M.L.S. (or equivalent) required.

  • Substantial experience in academic law libraries and in library administration preferred. Bar membership, either active or inactive, preferred.

    Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent record of service within law libraries.

  • Superior organizational, planning and administrative skills including the ability to work effectively on the broad picture as well as on the detail level.

  • Outstanding interpersonal oral and written communication skills. Aptitude and orientation towards collaborative leadership.

  • Clear vision for and understanding of the law library's role in legal education.

  • Strong understanding of legal publishing and the role of the law library in supporting faculty scholarship in all of its forms.

  • Ability to:

    o manage a complex organization, including strategic planning, budget and financial management, supervisory skills.

    o multi-task and maintain professionalism and collegiality.

    o work and lead in an atmosphere of collaboration and teamwork.

    o supervise, mentor, and develop staff.
