The editorial team at Backstage researches, creates and packages content to support and inspire our users in the major performing arts markets of London, New York City, and Los Angeles. We are looking for an editorial assistant with entry-level journalism/publishing experience to join our team.


If you are planning or have recently begun a career in editorial and are looking to gain experience in a professional and dynamic content organization, this is the opportunity for you.

About the Role

  • This is an entry-level contract position with potential for ongoing work, depending on the success of the candidate.

  • You'll join us for up to 24 hours per week, spread over Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tuesdays and Wednesdays will require set hours—on Thursdays the schedule can more flexible.

  • The ideal candidate is self-motivated, proactive, detail-oriented, communicative, receptive to feedback, learns quickly, and never, ever misses a deadline.


    • Submissions will only be reviewed if they include a LinkedIn profile and writing sample

What you'll learn:

  • How to adapt to the myriad jobs of a small editorial team

  • How to research a given subject in necessary depth

  • How to conduct and fact check an interview

  • How to fact check an article

  • During your down time, how to produce a reported series of articles about a relevant topic of your choosing (subject to editor’s approval)


The Gig/Responsibilities

  • Weekly upload of entire print issue to web (this is the most important)

  • Ongoing writing assignments

  • Transcribing interviews

  • Fact-checking industry articles

  • Researching industry contacts

  • Photoshoot on-site assistance (depending on experience)

  • Other project management

  • Other administrative tasks as needed, such as completing weekly editorial reports

Training Provided

  • Sitting in on weekly editorial pitch meetings and observing the inner workings of a small, dynamic content team

  • Working one-on-one with editors on the team to learn about their field of specialty

  • Training in tools used to create daily web content and a weekly print magazine: proofing, backend CMS tools, etc.

  • Interview skills training: how to identify and contact a subject, how to craft your questions, how to get the most out of a session

  • Training in web analytics and web traffic findings

Requirements

  • Must be extremely detail-oriented

  • Must be available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

  • Must be organized

Bonus Experience

  • Coursework in journalism, film, television and/or theater

  • Experience pitching/cold-calling/cold-emailing subjects

  • Experience working with a CMS

  • Experience with interviewing subjects

  • Multimedia or photography experience

  • Experience with analytics (Google Analysis and/or Parse.ly)

  • Previous editorial experience (academic or at another publication or e-commerce company)
