Looking for gardening assistant, to work eight hours days, M-F. Position begins early to mid-May, and runs through end of August or later. Ending time is somewhat flexible. Ideal job for college students, especially those in horticultural/landscape architecture fields. In many ways this job is akin to a paid apprenticeship in professional gardening/landscaping, as you will be working directly with the experienced, knowledgeable owner/operator of a 20+ year old, successful gardening business.
Must have dependable vehicle, as you will be driving your own car throughout the work day. We go to multiple clients per day, and you are paid from the time of arrival at the first client of the day through to when you leave the last client of the day, except for your lunch break. This means that you are paid for travel time between clients. We work eight hour days. We work mostly in perennial flower gardens, but also do a lot of shrub pruning, and a little bit of vegetable/fruit gardening. All work is done with hand tools, using only organic methods. Typical tasks include: weeding, edging, dividing perennials; planting annuals, deadheading, staking, pruning shrubs, and putting down mulch. No lawn mowing! Clients located in general stretch from SU area of Syracuse, eastward through Jamesville, Fayetteville, Manlius, and on to Cazenovia on the west.
Ideally you should have a good working knowledge of perennial and annual flowers (and weeds!), and shrubs, but more than anything you should have an enthusiastic interest in working with plants, and doing physical labor in the outdoors. This is a physical job, so you should be accustomed to doing hard work, and in all kinds of weather (a good rain suit is highly advisable).
