We are hiring a chef to lead our team.

This role requires an individual interested in delivering high quality food while offering attentive service to guests as well as coworkers. Ability to cultivate positive energy is a must. We seek someone who accepts accountability and who understands that investing in the skills and culture of the team is the best path to success.

Effective management of staff as well as the physical space will be important. Hiring will be carefully done to find people that want to participate in the system we create. You will train your culinary team to achieve results while requiring accountability to you, each other, and guests. The goal is creating a sustainable, orderly, and stable work environment that does not require you burning yourself out to achieve outstanding results.

Specific responsibilities

Food related:

Evaluate what we currently serve, and begin making menu changes based on what does and does not sell well

Define, monitor, and uphold food quality and presentation standards

Make sure systems are in place to complete prep, keep kitchen clean, place distributor orders effectively, and ensure service runs smoothly

Develop new menu items as well as specials

Implement food preparation tactics that maximize efficiencies in your kitchen

Maintain a tight and orderly kitchen that follows proper storage, labeling, food preparation, and safety protocols

Collaborate with waitstaff to fix service issues, hear customer feedback, and offer feedback

Management related:

Be responsible for kitchen culture and best practices. Hiring and training will be done to develop these

Serve as a reference point for the staff for questions on recipes, food specifics, and food quality

Maintain a score from the Health Department in at least the mid 90s, holding your team accountable. You should role-model cleanliness and have effective strategies for organizing the kitchen and all stations

Confer with the owner on culinary equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and organization

Manage financials and collaborate with the owner on systems to manage labor and food cost

Build your kitchen team by interviewing, hiring, providing performance improvement, and disciplinary action

Ensure the kitchen is set up for success with all tasks completed on time

Monitor the effectiveness of your team by providing timely positive and critical feedback

You have:

Multiple years managing a team with a clear record of success

A strong work ethic and appreciation for others with the same work ethic

Skills to motivate and develop the culinarians on your team

An appreciation for the people you work with

The ability to perform physical requirements of the position (lift up to 50lbs)

The willingness to roll up your sleeves and pitch in when necessary

The desire for professional improvement and the process of learning

The drive to network and build strong ties in your restaurant's community

The ability to consider variables to find the best solution to a problem

The desire to communicate effectively

An eye for detail and solving challenges

A desire for growth within our organization

Food Safety or equivalent certification

Strong leadership skills

A passion for real, good food

Compensation:

You will earn a competitive salary depending on experience and proven success. Very competitive.

About us:

Basil’s is a locally owned and established restaurant in Boone that serves fresh pasta, sandwiches, salads, soups, and desserts to individuals from a variety of backgrounds. We serve lots of locals, lots of students, and lots of seasonal guests.

We think that there is a lot that can be done with pasta beyond Alfredo and lasagna. We see interesting overlap between Italian cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine, and even southern cuisine. We can make 16 different pasta shapes in addition to ravioli and focus on made from scratch and fresh ingredients.

We pour craft beers usually brewed in NC, and have cocktails as well as a great wine list. Weekly wine tastings and community nights are popular with our guests. We have a small market where a selection of our pasta and sauces are available to take home and cook.
