CALYX Engineers and Consultants, an NV5 company, is seeking a summer intern for our environmental services group in the Cary, NC office. The summer intern will provide assistance to project managers, biologists and scientists with environmental projects. The most frequent and essential work activities include:

Assist with field work, investigations and data interpretation. Some field work could include stream and wetland delineation, threatened and endangered species surveys to include mist netting, acoustic surveys for bats and aquatic surveys for fish and mussels.

Perform other potential responsibilities that could include data management and data entry, professional contact with clients and landowners, equipment maintenance/decontamination and will require some office work.

Work long hours in difficult working conditions (extreme heat, biting insects) for multiple days.

Complete project tasks within deadlines and budgets.

Prerequisites for employment include:

Rising senior, recent graduate or graduate student in biology, botany, ecology, environmental engineering, wildlife or other related curriculum

Willingness to work long hours (days or nights) in challenging conditions (mosquitioes, biting flies, ticks, environments where venomous snakes, alligators, and bears are present)

Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word

Ability to carry heavy equipment (approximately 50 lbs.) long distances in field conditions

Willingness to travel for consecutive days/nights

Ability to identify southeastern vegetation-preferred

Knowledge of ArcGIS a plus

Experience with mist nets (bird or bat) a plus

Experience with electroshocking (fish) a plus

Recent rabies pre-exposure vaccination or titer check within the last two years a plus

Experience with acoustic equipment (ANABAT), data downloading and processing a plus

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license prior to employment

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The characteristics described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position. This position will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including weather conditions such as wet and /or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.

Work will primarily be in the field involving long term standing and frequent walking as well as include common hazards at project sites.

Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

Must be able to wade in water, walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to walk and/or stand up to 10-12 hours a day on occasion.

Must have the ability to see, smell, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel and twist, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, sit, stand, and walk.

Weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel will be required.

Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
