Job Description

Job responsibilities:

  • Hire and manage a world-class team of Technical Writers.

  • Promote a results-driven approach on the Technical Writing team by helping direct reports to balance assignments within the team when workloads are uneven, manage conflicting priorities, and prevent over resourcing.

  • Make sure that every Technical Writer on their team has clear priorities from their PMs/PM Directors for each milestone.

  • Manage documentation improvement efforts. Coordinate regular content audits for documentation in your area of responsibility.

  • Improve content usability by identifying opportunities to connect content that flows across multiple sections into end-to-end documentation that maps to GitLab JTBDs.

  • Make sure by the time of release all documentation, guides, and related content were shipped.

  • Help Technical Writers refine their writing skills by spot-checking content and providing editorial feedback.

  • Encourage efficient collaboration by defining processes that align with the rest of the product team, are consistent and efficient, and use GitLab capabilities to power process flows and metrics.

  • Create practices that encourage keeping documentation up to date and easily discoverable.

  • Promote and optimize the experience for documentation contributions from the GitLab team and the wider GitLab community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field

  • Certification through the Society for Technical Communicators

  • 5+ years of experience in as a Manager in Technical Writing or a combination of education and experience in this field

  • Experience in managing, mentoring, and training teams of Technical Writers

  • Experience in setting up online documentation

  • Previous experience using Git

  • Experience working on production-level documentation

  • Self-motivated and strong organizational skills

  • Strong written and spoken communication skills

  • Familiarity with Static Site Generators, HTML, CSS

  • Experience with workflows and tooling used by engineering, operations, product teams

  • Familiarity with Continuous Integration, Containers, Kubernetes, and project management software a plus

  • Experience engaging with a wide range of stakeholders across a company, its customers, and/or open-source communities
