We are looking for a highly motivated person to work in the laboratory of Dr. Kevin Franks in the Department of Neurobiology at Duke University. The overarching goal of The Franks laboratory (www.thefrankslab.org) is to develop a mechanistic understanding of neural computations at the interface between perception and memory. We use the mouse olfactory system to approach this question. To do this, we use a combination of in vivo and in vitro electrophysiological recordings, behavioral analyses, and different optogenetic and chemogenetic tools. This position is targeted for recent graduates wishing to gain practical lab experience investigating the structure and function of neural circuits while training in a state-of-the art research environment. The ideal candidate will be insatiably curious, hardworking, fun, flexible, and willing to function in a fast-paced and changing work environment.
Responsibilities for full-time research technicians include training and testing mice on odor detection and discrimination tasks, helping manage a small transgenic mouse colony, stereotactic surgeries, histology and immunohistochemistry, and some minor lab administrative work. An undergraduate degree in biology, neurosciences, chemistry, physics, or other related disciplines is required. Candidates with experience with MatLab, or a similar coding environment will be preferred.
