Occupational Summary

Work as part of a fast-paced, highly-productive research team led by Dr. Stephen Freedland at the Durham VA Medical Center. Manage and maintain a vast quantity of patient-oriented VA data that are used in support of analytical and/or clinical research projects.

Critical Element #1 -Maintain Database Systems

1. Refresh/Run views, queries, and stored procedures

2. Validate ongoing performance of database systems including change logs

3. Execute scripts for data processing/extraction

4. Ensure data security including privacy protection, backups, etc.

5. Schedule jobs for regular/after-hours queries, updates, backups, etc.

Critical Element #2 - Front End Implementation and Modification

1. Add fields, buttons, tables, labels and other elements to database front ends

2. Link front end elements to backend fields and reference tables

3. Write code to modify display of front end elements, including page refresh and conditional display

4. Deploy front ends to end users

Critical Element #3 - Acquire, Import, and Export Data

1. Access VA databases, repositories, and charts to abstract relevant data and transfer to relational databases

• Evaluate data efficacy and think critically about the data

• Map and transfer data elements between different data structures

2. Export data for investigators, study staff, and statisticians

3. Facilitate manipulation of data between different formats (excel, csv, etc.)

Critical Element #4 - Document Work and Maintain Documentation Systems

1. Document work related to database and query design through the use of comments, codebooks, and good programming practices

2. Recommend new methods for collection and documentation of data

3. Prepare electronic task logs for study personnel assisting in data abstraction

4. Revise and maintain procedural manuals and training materials, as needed

5. Provide written, oral, and/or electronic status reports of assigned tasks

6. Regularly update task management tools

7. Ensure code is regularly added to the repository

8. Maintain codebooks

Critical Element #5 - Collaborate and Communicate with Team Members

1. Compile data and metrics for review by other staff and collaborators

2. Help maintain group websites

3. Communicate with VA technology departments to address/resolve IT needs and problems

4. Coordinate with research coordinators to ensure all procedures adhere to HIPAA and IRB compliance

5. Provide input on project decisions related to timelines, feasibility, and other relevant issues

6. Work with team leads to make sure work is completed in timely manner for project deadlines to be met

7. Participate in team meetings on a frequent and regular schedule

8. Train additional team members, as necessary

Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems/Technology, or other relevant field

2. Intimate familiarity with relational database tools, design, analysis, and administration

a. Preferred minimum of 1 year practical experience administrating and customizing SQL Server, MySQL and/or Oracle databases with their associated tool sets in a production or support environment.

b. Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, VBA, and T-SQL

c. Experience in Rational Team Jazz Server development is a plus

3. Knowledge of database theory and design

4. Knowledge of the principles of data querying

5. Ability to manage multiple tasks, with changing priorities and deadlines

6. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

7. Ability to solve problems, troubleshoot, and quickly and independently learn new skills

8. Organized and detail-oriented

9. Willingness to learn

Employees work for the Institute for Medical Research and will have a WOC appointment at the Durham VA Medical Center.
