Position SummaryThis position's primary purpose is to serve as the lead subject matter expert that oversees the design, management, optimization, monitoring, upgrades, and scheduled maintenance of the mission critical data network and telephone systems for the entire University. This includes all on-premise data centers and cloud-based locations. All segments of University business, both academic and administrative, rely heavily on these services to function and without them would incur nearly complete work stoppages in most cases. BGSU's internet connectivity is one of our most critical components, this allows us to communicate with the world, and enables the University to offer services, such as distance learning to remote students, and videoconferencing participation with locations around the world while conducting university business. This team member provides key leadership for all aspects of these systems including the supervision of the staff that support this highly technical aspect of our computing environment. The University currently has well over $50,000,000 alone invested in the infrastructure this position will oversee and will nearly double this figure in the next 10 years. It is expected that the person in this position maintains and improves upon this environment such that it supports current and emerging technologies needs of the University.


Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Prioritize projects and work orders related to network equipment and telecommunications infrastructure. Perform work assignments to team members, review completed work, and ensure all tasks are performed within established SLA's
  • Analyze and evaluate current network components and bandwidth utilization in order to design and budget for upgrades to provide better service to faculty, staff, and students. Meet with vendors and service providers to plan for upgrades to network and telecom components and connectivity.
  • Meet with BGSU faculty, staff, and students, to evaluate network and telephony service needs, participate in multidisciplinary project teams, and propose network and telecommunication solutions that enhance the instructional, research, and business objectives of the organization.
  • Work with contractors and BGSU Design & Construction team members to ensure that ITS network and telephone needs are well represented, implemented, and appropriately included in construction and renovation projects. During these projects ensure that team members responsible for doing so review on-going construction initiatives to ensure that industry and ITS specific standards and specifications are being implemented appropriately.
  • Perform as a lead subject matter expert role in the design, oversight, and successful implementation of new or replacement network/telecom infrastructure, implement software configurations necessary to support enterprise level network/telecom operations, and complete hardware or software upgrades on existing or new network and telephone related components as needed. Perform ongoing optimization reviews and implement changes necessary to ensure compatibility, performance, and required capacity needs are being met.
  • Work with ITS security analysts to design, review, and implement network security infrastructure or mechanisms, including firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, segmentation, and network admission control mechanisms necessary to protect University intellectual property, privacy, and physical assets. Assist in the development of crisis response and disaster recovery plans as it relates to network and telecommunications functions. Assist with directly or provide guidance to other team members whom are supporting active security incident response activities.
  • Establish a comprehensive monitoring, benchmarking, and alerting environment for all network and telecommunication infrastructure components. This should include all wide area network links and respective equipment at all BGSU locations including Main campus, Firelands campus, and Levis Commons. This should also include the monitoring of environmental conditions (including power, air conditioning, and physical security) in all ITS networking data locations to ensure continuous network and voice communications uptime. Work closely with BGSU Campus Operations, Campus Safety, and outside contractors to resolve all problems as necessary.
  • Conduct ongoing research, attending training seminars as required, and learn about upcoming or new technologies that the University has invested in. This also includes the review of technical white papers and technical website articles to be aware of future upcoming trends.
  • Provide architectural oversight of campus safety systems, including emergency phones and security cameras. Work closely with ITS Information Security group and Public Safety to develop plans and requirements for expansion and enhancement of these systems as needed.


Knowledge, Skills or AbilitiesThis role requires a highly technical individual that has a subject matter expert understanding of network, telecommunications, networking hardware, cable plant, data center design, and network protocols. This person must also be able to be able to plan for network needs 5-10 years out, have excellent communication skills, and be able to manage to a budget and multi-task in a fast-paced environment. This position will also participate in 24x7 on call rotation.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related degree required. Successful candidate must have bachelor’s degree conferred at the time of application.
The following experience is required:
  • 4-7 years with technology responsibilities in a large (7,000-10,000 network devices), enterprise network environment
  • 4-7 years network switch, router, PBX, session border controller, and firewall experience
  • 1-2 years of supervision/team lead experience
  • 4-7 years budget, proposal and network design planning experience

Salary
Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level I58. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
