Job Summary:Under the direction of the Imaging Core Director, responsible for the daily operations of a research immunohistochemistry (IHC) lab, including supplies, equipment, and project management. Responsible for providing high quality services, expertise, education, and immunohistochemistry/histology resources to researchers at Cleveland Clinic and other institutions.Responsibilities:

Assists investigators in experimental design and the planning of technical aspects of research projects involving imunohistochemistry. Determines feasibility of techniques and investigates options. Identifies problems. Recommends changes/solutions.

Oversees the operation of the immunohistochemistry laboratory, including daily maintenance of all lab supplies and equipment. Investigates and resolves routine operating problems; refers complex problems to Imaging Core Manager or Director.

Performs immunohistochemical staining of both human and animal tissues either on the benchtop or using a Ventana automated IHC stainer. Provides information to investigators on progress of work.

Participates in the preparation of information for reports, publications, and presentations, etc. May serve as a resource on special research projects and procedures. May design educational materials and IHC website information.

Operates independently in handling client requests - from initial inquiries to completed projects - prioritizing tasks, determining timelines, gathering needed supplies, communicating as needed throughout the process, and evaluating successful or problematic results.

Develops budgets for clients, as requested - especially for projects requiring unusual antibodies - and assures that billing is done in an accurate and timely manner.

Oversees the IHC lab area and instruments to assure quality and to maintain good order, proper custody of samples, slides, etc., and the efficient use of all necessary supplies.

Provides back-up for primary histologist.

Education:

Master's Degree in an appropriate scientific field such as Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, or other similar science major or a Bachelor's Degree in appropriate science major such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or other similar science major, and a minimum of four years of experience in a research or clinical section.

Additional years of experience may substitute for degree requirements.

Demonstrated technical proficiency in the performance of immunohistochemistry techniques.

Computer skills sufficient to track specimens, enter chargebacks, and maintain order entry are required.

Ability to monitor quality control/quality assurance.

Must be detail oriented and have excellent communication skills and work well in a service-oriented environment.

Certifications:

None required.

Complexity of Work:

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

A minimum of two years of immunohistochemistry experience and the ability to work independently on a variety of projects, demonstrated through a thorough understanding of IHC techniques and procedures.

Advanced understanding of IHC procedures and experience highly preferred.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
