Summary: Meta seeks a highly motivated, team player to serve as Lead Counsel, Patents. This position will facilitate freedom to innovate for the metaverse by building and shaping our patent portfolio, counseling clients on patent issues, mitigating patent risk, and supporting IP-heavy transactions, patent litigation, licensing, and acquisitions. This position will be exposed to diverse technologies and will collaborate proactively with teams across the Legal, Product, Engineering, Research, and Business Development organizations. This role reports to the Head of Portfolio Strategy, Reality Labs. This is a great opportunity to join a collaborative legal team and work on patent issues that intersect broader IP issues and business goals in an exciting, fast-paced environment.Required Skills: Lead Patent Counsel, Reality Labs Responsibilities:Manage patent portfolio and related activities for multiple product/technology areas, including invention identification, patent committees, invention disclosure meetings, portfolio mining, and overseeing patent application preparation and prosecution
Manage outside counsel and service providers to support these patent-related work
Work with legal, product, and engineering teams to identify and protect products, services, and technologies that map to Meta’s patent strategy
Understand Meta's strategic and competitive position and think at a high level about patent strategy
Counsel and educate product, engineering teams, and other partners in intellectual property matters
Support IP aspects of commercial transactions, as well as patent litigation, licensing, and patent acquisitions
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:J.D. Degree (or foreign equivalent)
Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
6+ years of patent experience, including at a law firm and/or in-house experience
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:In-house experience, especially strategic patent portfolio development and counseling of R&D leadership
Experience adapting and prioritize in a fast-paced environment, maintaining big-picture focus on company goals
Experience in several of the following: patent portfolio development and maintenance, patent analysis, technology transactions support, patent acquisitions, patent divestiture, trade secret issues, and licensing and handling of third party demands
Communication, collaboration, and negotiation skills
Interpersonal, leadership, and team skills
Knowledge of physics, electrical engineering or related engineering fields, either through undergraduate degree or industry experience
