Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a Research Assistant to join the Performance Tapes Division. The Research assistant will support innovation and new technology development in the North America R&D group. This role is passionate about lab execution of testing for product development. A major part of the work includes the execution of a variety of analytical techniques and product performance testing. You will work in close cooperation with research scientists and product development engineers, being detailed-oriented and capable of delivering professional reports for critical technology platforms.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that all actions stay in sync with our safety and quality procedures
  • Formulation, coating and testing of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes
  • Hands on mechanical and product performance testing of tapes and adhesives
  • Day to day operation of analytical instrumentation including: rheology, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), DSC, TGA, FTIR and optical microscopy
  • Cooperation with the colleagues and functions within all Avery Dennison functions and external parties (i.e. Marketing, areas of R&D, Suppliers/Customers)
  • Conduct experiments/studies to support technology platforms and product development
  • Environmental awareness and safety conscious.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor degree in polymer/material science, chemistry or chemical engineering
  • Laboratory and hands on research experience
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset with a high attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Previous internship/co-op experience
  • Experience with rheology and dynamic mechanical analysis
  • Knowledge in statistical analysis of data
  • Skilled in executing experiments; demonstrated scientific acuity and critical thinking in acquiring results.
  • Skilled in making moderately sophisticated mathematical computations (data analysis, statistics, calculus)
  • Shown experience in completing moderately sophisticated technical assignments with limited supervision; analyzing sophisticated data and preparing reports and recommendations.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Skilled in interfacing optimally with cross-functional groups to define and execute requirements.
  • Strong lab protocol knowledge and comfortable with various mechanical test equipment.
  • Solid scientific and engineering knowledge and experience in specialty.
  • Effective with working in a fast paced & dynamic environment, and able to prioritize multiple work streams concurrently
