Mathematica is seeking to hire a team of part-time, short-term classroom observers to work on the American Indian and Alaska Native Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey 2019 (AI/AN FACES 2019), which is sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Administration for Children and Families, Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation.

About the Study

AI/AN FACES is a large-scale study of Region XI Head Start programs, which are operated by federally recognized AI/AN tribes. The study provides descriptive, nationally representative information on the characteristics, experiences and development of Region XI Head Start children and families, and the characteristics of the Head Start programs and staff who serve them. The study consists of various components, including classroom observations, child assessments, and surveys for parents, teachers, and other program staff.

About the Position

During a nine-week period in late winter/early spring 2020, Mathematica will employ a team of classroom observers, who will travel weekly to selected Head Start programs in AI/AN communities across the country for approximately three days. During these visits, observers will conduct observations of a set of selected study classrooms.

This is a short-term, part-time position averaging 30 hours per week for approximately 9 weeks. Observers will be required to work a variable schedule, including evenings and weekends, and must be available for extended overnight travel throughout the country.

Compensation:

Pay for this position is $17/hour (or more based on experience). Compensation includes an additional health and welfare benefit. All work-related travel, accommodations, and meals are included when traveling for the project.

Observers will¦

Observe classrooms using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R), and additional measures developed for AI/AN FACES

Take detailed notes during the observation

Use a laptop to enter observation scores and selected notes on the same day as the observation

Submit time, mileage, and expense forms daily

Complete and return observation booklets according to required deadlines

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities

Experience working with and/or in AI or AN communities

Highly cultivated cultural competency coupled with strong cross cultural understanding and communication skills

Demonstrated ability to effectively relate to and support diverse populations

Possess a high standard of integrity and understanding of AI/AN issues to ensure that work is culturally appropriate and respectful

Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED

Be comfortable working in a preschool setting, and in all types of communities, including rural and remote

Ability and willingness for extended overnight travel to AI/AN communities throughout the country

Strong attention to detail

Experience and ability to operate a laptop computer with skills and visual acuity including connecting to Wi-Fi.

Ability to work well independently and under the direction of project coordinators

Ability to meet various physical demands, including, but not limited to:

Meeting the physical requirements of the position with or without accommodations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for periods of time, use hands and fingers, talking, and hearing.

Possess a valid Drivers License and/or have reliable transportation

Preferred experience

Experience conducting classroom observations, using the CLASS, ECERS-R, and/or similar observation tools

Data collection experience strongly preferred, particularly in Head Start or preschool settings

Degree in Early Childhood Education, Psychology, or related field

Training and Schedule:

Paid (including travel, accommodations, and meals), in-person, mandatory training is scheduled for February 5-13, 2020 in Tucson, AZ

Further employment is contingent upon successful completion of training and certification

Must pass a criminal background check

Qualified candidates should be available to commit for the full length of the observations data collection process (approximately March, April, and May 2020)
