Provides supervision for a team of skilled underwriters who review, analyze, and assess risk on life insurance applications and the underwriting support staff. Balances team coordination and leadership with financial and risk management acumen. Oversees daily workload, training, and production to ensure expectations and delivery timelines are understood, and stepping in to provide support, answer questions, or independently conduct research to analyze risk for specific and complex applications. Uses analytical skills and risk management to update and contribute to the existing guidelines for the underwriting department by developing and enacting policies and procedures. Identifies unnecessary or out-of-date processes to correct any inefficiency within the department. Attends industry-specific seminars to expand knowledge and remain current on industry developments. Researches and advises on requests that are dependent on the collaboration of multiple departments. Reviews audits for quality control ensuring that personnel followed proper procedures and company guidelines, and takes steps to resolve any discrepancies within the underwriting guidelines and for each employee individually to optimize the department's performance. Assists with daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting for executive management. Responsible for payroll, attendance, time off requests, employee evaluations/performance reviews, ongoing constructive feedback, developing and empowering staff, staff hiring, and communicating new procedures and policies.



Primary Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Review daily workload and distribute according within the department to ensure everything is completed within the departments' standards.

  • Review daily, weekly, and monthly production of each underwriter and the underwriting support staff to ensure efficiency.

  • Meet regularly with department Auditor to ensure guidelines are followed.

  • Review, correct and report discrepancies encountered throughout daily routines.

  • Reconcile and resolve department conflict while following the protocols put in place by HR.

  • Handles staff hiring for the department.

  • Coach and counsel the team daily as questions arise.

  • Complete all employee evaluations/performance appraisals and conduct employee reviews.

  • Reviews and submits payroll and time-off requests.

  • Coordinate staff with other departments to maintain workflow.

  • Coordinate testing of new products and processes within underwriting to ensure all compliance requirements are met.

  • Research and advise on requests and escalated issues including legal complaints and grievances from other departments.

  • Assist in the implementation of underwriting policies and procedures.

  • Audit and quality control for all underwriting processes. Confirm all applications are being handled accurately and timely.

  • Communicate with management and correct any discrepancies or issues found during audits.

  • Provide ongoing constructive feedback to the underwriting team to ensure all policies and procedures are being followed as intended and to encourage individual growth.

  • Conduct check-ins, training, and res to ensure the development and empowerment of the team while communicating and new policies and procedures.

  • Use logical reasoning to make decisions where the response is not immediately clear.

  • Work with IT for problem resolution and testing of systems.

  • Assist as necessary with any additional duties as determined by upper management.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred

  • 2-4 years' experience in a lead or supervisor position

  • 2-4 years' experience in the life insurance industry preferred

  • A combination of education and/or experience can be considered
