BACKGROUND

The Oregon AFL-CIO is the state federation of labor unions, representing over 300,000 working Oregonians. Our mission is to improve the lives of our members and all workers, and to raise the standard of living for all Oregonians through collective bargaining, advocacy, and political education and outreach. Our office is based in Portland and we are hiring a full-time regional staff member to represent the Oregon AFL-CIO in Central and Eastern Oregon. Regional staff will facilitate Oregon Strong Voice (OSV) Central Oregon, a local network of community-labor alliances; support Oregon AFL-CIO Central Labor Chapters by running programs and facilitating strategic planning; and assist all affiliated unions in the area as needed. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to strengthen the voice of working people in the Central and Eastern Oregon.

PRIMARY DUTIES

— Represent the interests of the Oregon AFL-CIO (its officers, staff, and affiliates), Central Labor Chapters, and members of the OSV Coalition.

— Act as liaison between the Oregon AFL-CIO and affiliated unions, Central Labor Chapters and OSV.

— Work with the Oregon AFL-CIO, Chapters and OSV to identify and support the priorities and programs of the workers' movement in your region.

— Implement a year-round member mobilization and communication program in close coordination with Oregon AFL-CIO staff.

— Engage in the political process by organizing phone banks, canvasses, and forums to support chapter-endorsed candidates.

— In coordination with the Oregon AFL-CIO, keep the Central Labor Chapters and OSV coalition appraised of federal, state, and local legislation and actively engage chapters and OSV coalitions in advocacy around those issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

— Strong understanding of and passion for the labor movement

— Strong commitment to economic, racial, and gender justice

— Excellent communication (written and verbal) and leadership skills

— Detail oriented

— Ability to work independently while also having a positive, team-player attitude

— Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills

— Political knowledge and familiarity with canvassing and phone banking

— Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle

— Proficiency with technology, including social media, participating weekly video conferences, google docs, and taking photographs at events

— Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed

— Excellent references

— Live and/or have roots in Central Oregon, preferably Bend/Redmond.

PREFERRED SKILLS

— Experience within the labor movement

— Experience with political campaigns

— Experience building and facilitating coalitions

— Experience organizing events and actions

— Fluency in Spanish
