The job in a nutshell: The Ophthalmic Technician will provide excellent patient care by performing a variety of ophthalmic tests and will act as a patient liaison.

This role is designed for a person who loves people (patients, staff, and vendor partners) as well as the nuts-and-bolts side of planning and process. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you'll offer support to patients and maintain effective relationships with management, physicians, and industry representatives.

Reports to: Technician Supervisor

That being said, an ideal candidate would meet the minimum requirements and have the following skills. Specific duties will vary by individual physician, but will typically include the following:

Interact with and care for patients in a manner consistent with ECA mission and values.

Call patients from waiting room and escort them to examination rooms.

Obtain and document patient history and current complaints.

Optimize patient flow and direct physician to the next patient to be seen.

Perform visual acuity tests and other screening tests

Perform diagnostic testing, including OCT, Humphrey Visual Field, Lenstar and Topography.

Perform refraction and determine near correction needs.

Perform ocular motility/alignment and gross confrontation field testing.

Check intraocular pressure.

Instill dilating drops at the discretion of physician being assisted.

Perform lensometry and pachymetry.

Sterilize equipment/instruments in accordance with the established sterilization schedule and procedure.

Maintain an adequate supply of sterile equipment in each exam/treatment room.

Maintain inventory of medical supplies.

Maintain clean rooms/equipment, including set-up, clean-up and assisting if needed for minor surgeries.

Properly handle lab specimens and send out for analysis.

Authorize prescription refills in accordance with practice standards as defined by physician, and complete written prescriptions for medicines and glasses under direction of physician.

Field patient questions over the telephone.

Instill ophthalmic medications and apply eye dressing/patches as directed by physician.

Instruct patients on installation of eye medications, post-operative care and other home care.

Schedule patient appointments, ancillary testing (i.e. FA/photos) and surgeries, including completion of necessary forms, information, and prior authorization.

Interact and cooperate with Sight Shop employees; refer patients to Sight Shops.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Will train the right person: must be a fast learner who is determined to succeed—on the job training can be intense and frustrating.

Experience in a medical field desired.

Preferred: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Certified Ophthalmic Technician

Excellent verbal and written communication skills - you display a high degree of diplomacy and tact even in challenging situations.

High-level of personal ownership and team work.

Problem solving skills - you act quickly and follow through when problems occur.

Experience working with computer operating systems, software programs.

Understand the essential clinic activities, focusing on the delivery of efficient and quality services.

Ensure practices and procedures within clinic comply with applicable state and federal regulations.

Be willing to travel to offices in Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon with trips to Lincoln City 1-2 times per month.
