POSITION SUMMARY:

The Group Leader is responsible for the direct supervision of a group of children, grades K-5, in an after school program. They are responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of all 9 program components and program activities. They create positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with families, school and BEST staff. The Group Leader guides the academic and social development of children; ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy learning environment. Group Leaders are required to participate in ongoing professional development and planning sessions with the Site Director on a scheduled basis. They provide a quality experience to children and parents that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Group Leader must have the competencies, skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the YMCA mission, goals, and visions for serving the community. The Group Leader will be responsible for the following:

Ensures the safety and engagement of children in assigned group. Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.

Demonstrates competency with the DESSA assessment tool. (Howard staff only)

Plans and uses the S.A.F.E. framework to facilitate purposeful and engaging activities and group projects that compliment the programs thematic or project-based agenda according to the program 9 components and site implementation plan.

Provides assistance with homework and encourages academic progress.

Follows program lesson plans and implementation plan in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the participants.

Provides careful, attentive supervision. Alert at all times.

Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior and understands positive youth development approaches to the academic and social development of youth.

Facilitates a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.

Promotes a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions with others. Maintains ongoing communication with supervisor.

Communicates regularly with parents; attends parent/family events as designated by supervisor.

Demonstrates a working knowledge of the YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS:

20 semester or 30 quarter credits in Child Development, Early Education, Physical Education, Recreation, Special Education, Early Education OR 600 hours of summer camp experience OR one year experience working in a childcare center licensed by the state.

At least 18 years of age.

Valid driver license.

CPR, First Aid, Food Handlers certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.

Enrolled in the Child Care Division Central Background Registry (oregonearlylearning.com) and proof of enrollment.

Previous experience with diverse populations preferred. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from all backgrounds.

Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.

Experience in creating interactive and educational/artistic activities, youth development, academic enrichment and arts.

Must possess oral, auditory and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.

Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

Acquire 18 hours of training per year.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities such as sports, games and curriculum activities and monitor behavior inside and outside.

Must be able to walk, run, stand, sit, kneel and get back to a standing position.

Ability to lift and carry weight of 50lbs.

General housekeeping “ Mop/Sweep. Take trash out. Wash dishes. Clean tables, toys, stack and put baskets away etc.

HOURS:

Monday-Thursday, possibility of Fridays

Before School- (McCornack & River Road) 6:50a-8:40a

After School- McCornack & River Road 2:30p-6p, Friday early release 1:15p-6p

Howard 2p-6p, Friday early release 12:45p-6p

Additional hours on No School Days, meetings and trainings
