General Statement of DutiesThe Eugene Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, customer-centric addition to our Circulation team. The person in this position performs work that involves proactive and friendly patron service to all members of our community and responds to patron needs with positive solutions in person, via email, and over the telephone. Daily tasks include using computerized information systems to perform skilled clerical and routine paraprofessional library duties, such as responding to patron needs by providing accurate account management which includes card registration and renewal; money-handling and financial transactions; problem-solving; and material check-in and check-out. The successful candidate will also have strong communication and problem resolution skills. This position may be assigned to other work units in the library system.Schedule:This position will be 24 hours/week. Schedule is determined by seniority draw and is subject to change. Must be available to work during hours of Library operations. Primary work location will be the Downtown Library Branch. Work may be assigned at other Branch locations or Library work-units as needed.Candidates from this recruitment process may be put on an eligibility list and considered for future vacancies. Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the followingIn addition to the full scope of duties of the Library Assistant 2, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:Assists patrons in using the library by proactively welcoming and engaging internal and external customers. Works at fast-paced public desks and phone service point; actively listens, understands, and courteously responds to patron questions concerning Library policies, procedures, and requests for information by patrons in person or by telephone.Follows standard procedures and uses automated circulation system to check out Library materials to patrons; assesses materials for damages; makes appropriate adjustments to item record or patron record.Registers patrons for Library cards by confirming eligibility, entering data accurately into Library computer system; renews patron accounts, issues replacement cards, updates patron files following established protocols.Assess charges to patron accounts; enters charges into the circulation system, collects fees and charges; leaves appropriate documentation in the patron account.Check in, sort, checks parts, and shelves materials; processes, retrieves, and shelves patron hold requests. Remove hold requests from shelves when not claimed and processes the item back into the collection.Contact patrons by phone or in writing regarding issues with their library account. Provide information on their personal account, location or availability of materials, resources, and services.Refer reference, online catalog, or complex policy questions to proper staff for assistance.Actively support and respect diversity in the workplace.Assist patrons in use of Library equipment; maintain and perform minor troubleshooting for electronic equipment.Participate in various Library committees and project teams; attend various Library, departmental and/or City meetings.Ensure that assigned areas are clean and orderly. May also be assigned Library Assistant 1 duties.Perform other clerical and Library duties as assigned.QualificationsAbility to:Assist patrons in using the Library by proactively welcoming and engaging patrons in a friendly manner; listen, understand and resolve patron needs by providing positive solutions.Manage multiple demands at one time; remain focused on tasks at hand, regardless of distractions.Work at fast-paced public desks; accurately enter data, calculate fines, accurately collect payments, and accurately dispense change. Deliver service in a positive and helpful manner; provide clear answers to questions concerning Library policies, procedures, and requests for information by patrons verbally in person or by telephone, in writing, or refer to appropriate staff.Exercise sound, tactful, and creative judgment in resolution of routine and unusual patron situations.Maintain patron and colleague confidentiality and support access to information and materials for patrons.Maintain respectful and effective staff and public relations; communicate tactfully, respectfully, and courteously with the public and Library and City colleagues both orally and in writing.Apply excellent internal and external customer service skills to a diverse patron base. Present oneself and the Library in a positive manner.Learn applicable Library methods, procedures, practices, and terminology within six months. Perform accurate alphabetic and numeric filing.Accurately perform repetitive tasks including via keyboard data entry. Perform intermediate-level or higher tasks on a computer in a networked computer environment. Learn relevant computer equipment and software within six months.Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; actively follow through on assignments.Work effectively and supportively as a member of a team and/or committee charged with accomplishing specific tasks.Display sensitivity toward, and acceptance of, particular needs and interests of diverse populations.Willingly, and positively, adhere to the Library's established mission, goals, and standards of conduct; follow established policies and procedures.Take initiative, work independently and as a part of a motivated team at multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, completing all tasks in a timely manner.Perform general, basic troubleshooting.Be punctual, dependable, and reliable.Physically and safely perform all required duties including standing and walking for long periods of time; repetitively stoop, bend, lift, reach parallel to, above, and below the waistline; perform repetitive fine hand and wrist manipulation for sustained periods of time; push a full book cart or bin while exerting a force of 15-35 pounds; sustain frequent movement at waistline, neck, and wrist while working at desk and re-shelving materials.Correctly and safely operate Library equipment.Minimum Requirements:Note: Must be available to work all hours the Library is open and when work is scheduled.EducationHigh school diploma or GED.ExperienceOne year clerical experience including experience working with the public; experience in a Library setting preferred.Fluency in Spanish, in addition to English, is desirable.
