The City of Medford has three (3) opportunities available in the Public Works Department! These positions are full-time, temporary up to 6 months, Monday through Thursday, 10 hours a day. No experience required! Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license and have graduated from high school or have GED.

The Public Works Laborer performs manual labor in conjunction with semi-skilled equipment operation in repair and maintenance of the sewer collection system repair and repair and maintenance of the storm drainage system, repair and maintenance of streets, maintenance of signs and pavement markings, and underground utility repair and maintenance. This position may be assigned to multiple sections within Public Works Operations. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification, but may give direction to employees on specific assignments. May be required to work variable shifts.

Typical Job Duties:

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization. Position specific responsibilities may vary depending on the assigned section. This position:

Loads, drives, and unloads vehicles in transporting tools, materials, and equipment.

Practices safety rules and accident prevention measures.

Assists in the operation of, and occasionally operates equipment.

Performs work zone traffic control and flagging.

Will be required to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time in various weather conditions including weather extremes.

Documents a variety of work logs, maps, and recordkeeping.

Operates a variety of hand and power tools.

Performs emergency services during adverse weather conditions, which may include: removing snow and debris from roadways, sanding roads, high water response, etc.

Scope of assigned area of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director.

Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.

Must have the ability to handle job stress and interact effectively with others in the workplace.

Must be honest and truthful in all tasks and responsibilities.

Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.

Examples of responsibilities assigned to various sections may include:

Surface Maintenance Section: Repair and maintain streets, alleys, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, bridges, and underground utilities.

Sewer Section: Assist and operate pipeline clearing equipment, perform pump station maintenance, perform confided space entry, and assist with pipeline inspection.

Traffic Section: Perform signing and striping maintenance, pavement markings, design and layout, sign construction and installation, and operation and maintenance of paint striping equipment.

Storm Drainage Section: Assist in cleaning of storm drainage facilities including pipes, ditches, ponds, and vegetation control. Assist and operate pipeline cleaning equipment, assist with mowing and operate string trimmer, and assist with water quality facility maintenance.

Job Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or GED; and

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession.

Knowledge of safety rules, accident prevention practices and traffic laws and regulations.

Good reading, writing, and basic math skills.

Possession of licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment, such as:

Requires possession of a valid driver's license. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver's license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).

Must maintain acceptable driving record.

Requires completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
