Clatsop Community College, a public, two-year institution, located in Astoria, Oregon, serving students and communities in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, is seeking part-time Buyer/Lead Clerk for its Bookstore.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Bookstore Manager, coordinates purchasing of non-text merchandise for Bookstore and acts as lead staff member responsible for the operation of Bookstore sales floor. Monitors and maintains the overall appearance of the public areas of the Bookstore, performs buyer responsibilities, oversees customer service and cashier duties. Occasional evenings and weekends required. Works closely with Faculty and Staff on Copy Center Jobs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1. Provides outstanding customer service in a retail college store environment to students, faculty, staff and the general public.

2. Quickly and accurately orders, receives, prices and shelves retail merchandise according to established store procedures; assists director with reviewing/revising purchasing procedures, as needed.

3. Continually monitors and maintains inventory levels to ensure timely availability of products within existing Bookstore guidelines; accurately determines retail prices of merchandise within established Bookstore policy; assists with year-end inventory.

4. Designs and creates visually attractive displays and promotions for retail merchandise; develops merchandising plans for stocking and rearranging displays for maximum sales potential; assists in planning and executing sales/special events.

5. Collaborates on retail assortment choices with Bookstore Manager and other Bookstore staff; frequently reviews new products to determine desirable additions/replacements to Bookstore inventory.

6. Assists the store manager in developing advertising/promotional plans and marketing strategies to insure profit goals within Bookstore procedures while maintaining competitive pricing.

7. Identifies vendors to ensure the best quality and pricing are obtained; maintains regular communications with vendors/vendor reps; effectively coordinates returns of overstock and damaged/defective products to vendors.

8. Regularly communicates with faculty and staff to determine which products to stock; informs faculty and staff concerning Bookstore policies and procedures.

9. Assists in monitoring staff/instructional supply inventory and arranges for replenishment of items as necessary; processes merchandise requests for departments and staff.

10. Oversees general sales/cashier operations; covers for cashier, as needed; runs end-of-day reports.

11. Opens and closes store as assigned; oversees standard operating procedures in the absence of store manager; assists director in monitoring, training, and scheduling temp and student/work study staff.

12. Sorts and distributes college mail.

13. Assists in ordering, receiving and returning of textbooks.

14. Performs other duties and projects as required or assigned.

15. Assists with the operation of the college’s copy center.

16. Operates high speed copiers and performs collating, stapling, cutting, binding, punching for copy center projects.

17. Basic computer graphing knowledge such as Publisher and Adobe.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School graduation or equivalent + three or more years of customer service and/or retail sales experience performing general sales, purchasing, merchandising, and accounting activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Previous experience with textbook sales

Previous experience creating merchandise displays

Previous experience with working with students or acting as a lead worker to other employees

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to stand for extended periods, as well as bend, reach, stoop, twist and/or crouch.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders and operate a hand truck.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

o Knowledge of general principles, processes and procedures concerning retail operations and/or college stores.

o Knowledge of principles and methods for effectively promoting and selling products, e.g. merchandising, pricing and marketing strategies.

o Knowledge of basic math, accounting and budget management.

o Knowledge of basic filing and record-keeping practices.

o Knowledge of basic shipping/receiving procedures.

o Knowledge of online ordering systems.

o Knowledge of point-of-sale (POS) and inventory control systems.

o Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

o Knowledge of Adobe software such as InDesign and Photoshop.

o Knowledge of procedures and processes of setting up and operating a high speed copier and other printing and bindery equipment.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

o Excellent customer service and phone skills.

o Excellent interpersonal, written communication and organization skills

o Skill in basic mathematical computations.

o Ability to work effectively under pressure and time constraints in a busy retail environment.

o Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff and the public.

o Ability to work successfully with vendors for the procurement of goods with maximum sales potential and profit for the Bookstore.

o Ability to quickly and efficiently gather product data, comparison shop, and use online order systems.

o Ability to effectively order and promote retail merchandise including (but not limited to) office and school supplies, software, electronics, art materials, clothing and branded merchandise, food, health and beauty aids, gifts and seasonal items.

o Ability to quickly create visually attractive displays and to continually re-arrange them for maximum sales potential.

o Ability to effectively and accurately operate electronic cash registers, adding machines and other office equipment.

o Ability to quickly and effectively operate personal computers with MS Windows operating system.

o Ability to quickly and accurately learn and apply knowledge of Bookstore rules, regulations and procedures.

o Ability to use Adobe software such as InDesign, Acrobat and Photoshop.

o Ability to use Microsoft Office programs.

o At a minimum, it is required of every employee to be able to: use a computer terminal to log in to e-mail; read and create e-mail messages; access the intranet system to find and complete forms and read institutional documents; access the internet and the College's web site; use the calendaring function of the College's e-mail system; and utilize department specific data entry and/or work order software to facilitate departmental tasks.
