Outside In is looking for a Certified Medical Assistant to join our health care team, specializing in providing care to patients experiencing chronic disease.

Outside In’s downtown Portland clinic is a Federally Qualified Health Center. That means we’re a clinic for everyone. We provide comprehensive, integrated health care services for youth beginning at age 13 and adults of all ages – including seniors.

The Chronic Disease Team Medical Assistant provides critical support for people living with chronic diseases, like diabetes and hypertension. Working alongside nurses, pharmacists, and providers, this Medical Assistant conducts outreach to keep at-risk patients connected to the supports they need to thrive.

This is a full-time, union-represented non-exempt position with a pay range of $19.53 - $22.84 per hour.  You are a proactive problem-solver and are always on the hunt for processes and procedures that could cause a problem in the future.

What You’ll Do

 Patient care:

 Obtain and document patient history, vital signs, and other established screening procedures.

 Explain methods of health and disease prevention to patients.

 Encourage patients to utilize available health services via the Outside In Diabetes Health Clinic and associated programming.

 Support the use and distribution of remote self-measured monitoring devices to patients through education, appointment scheduling, and patient follow-up.

 Prepare and administer medications, injections, and immunizations.

 Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments.

 Apply principles of aseptic technique and infection control.

 Conduct outreach to chronic disease patients.

 Recognize and respond to emergencies.

 Perform CLIA waived tests (including but not limited to HgbA1C, HIV, Hgb, UA, Strep, Covid).

 Perform basic administrative medical assisting functions.

 Facilitate relationships between providers and referral coordinators to assure image scheduling and referrals to other agencies and medical specialists.

 Participate in quality improvement and workflow development.

 Must have completed a Medical Assisting program with an externship or 2 years of experience in a medical office setting as a Medical Assistant within the last five (5) years.

 Must have or be able to obtain AAMA, CCMA or NCCT certification within 3 months of hire

 Must have a valid Healthcare Provider CPR card

 Excellent communication skills

 Bilingual – Spanish preferred

 Prior experience using an Electronic Health Record such as EPIC preferred

 Knowledge of infection control principles and practices

 Knowledge of HIPAA laws and patient rights

 Able to handle multiple tasks and crisis situations

 Willingness and ability to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of situations

 Able to work with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic and sexual preference backgrounds

 Able to work both independently and as a member of a primary care team

 Be able to demonstrate MA proficiencies successfully at 90-day review

Working Conditions

 This job is located in a standard medical office environment, embedded in a school. Ability to travel may be needed to support other agency clinics and teams.
