About the Position:
The Educational Technologist provides technical training, planning, and guidance for Outreach and Continuing Education at Western Washington University, with a primary emphasis on the East Sound (Bellingham, Everett, Seattle, Mt. Vernon, Olympia, Tacoma, and Online), and partner institution staff and faculty. This position will work with Western faculty and staff in the management of instructional technology projects, including aspects of assessment, analysis, design, development, delivery, and evaluation; provide guidance and support as it pertains to synchronous and asynchronous distance education solutions; provide instructional design and development support for programs supported by Outreach and Continuing Education; collaborate with units across Outreach and Continuing Education and the University to provide assistance with special projects; and support the general functions and operations of Outreach and Continuing Education, specifically pertaining to technology support and management for Puget Sound East.
Instructional Design and Development
Work collaboratively with academic programs and faculty to design and develop instructional content and media for programs and courses, following field-standard instructional design methods and practices and acknowledging university strategic efforts for program development
Design and implement interactive, media-based instructional materials to address teaching and learning needs in collaboration with academic and outreach-focused units
Follow and promote universal design for learning (UDL) guidelines and web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG) standards in the development instructional materials;
Research, investigate, and present on instructional strategies, methods, and technologies to support the teaching and learning process
Manage and maintain learning objects on course sites and across platforms, specifically for Westerns learning management system (Canvas)
Ability to conduct preliminary course review for faculty and academic units, following field standards or using a quality-review matrix (Quality Matters)
Online Education Administration
Provide direct faculty and program support in the development and delivery of online and distance educational opportunities, including providing programmatic support and guidance for curricular design, as appropriate
Collaborate in the strategic planning of online teaching and learning initiatives at Western;
Identify potential areas of new online development and work with supervisor in establishing an annual outreach and development plan
Serve as liaison between WesternOnline and EE Marketing to develop outreach materials, review web edits, and ensure consistency across program promotions and outreach
Serve as one of Outreach and Continuing Educations Canvas administrators, in partnership with Academic
Technology and User Services
Represent WesternOnline at university functions, including in meetings and committees;
Work with supervisor to generate reporting for WesternOnline
Media Management and Administration
Manage Outreach and Continuing Education operations for region with instructional media services, covering all aspects of development, production, and implementation
Provide guidance to academic programs as it pertains to distance education technology solutions, including web conferencing, interactive television (ITV), and other media-based solutions
Manage the ITV and online-synchronous support for academic programs in collaboration with Western stakeholders and partner institutions:
o Communicate with cross-campus leadership on issues pertaining to problems, new opportunities, and best practices;
Identify new solutions and opportunities for media-based technologies to address current and future programmatic needs
Staff and Faculty Professional Development/Training
Collaborate with supervisor, EE administration, faculty program directors, and cross-campus partners to identify training and professional development needs
Identify key areas of training and processional development needs
Develop training and instructional documentation for cross-campus audiences and needs
Deliver training and professional development in accordance with the professional development plan to staff and faculty, specifically in the areas of online teaching and learning, educational technology, and instructional design
Review and assess training programs, related to performance and alignment of trainings with strategic objectives
Provide technical guidance for technology-based learning solutions, including one-on-one and small group trainings for Westerns learning management system (Canvas), educational media options, and other technology-based solutions
General Technology Services
Manage on-site and cross-campus technology-related needs and issues
Work in collaboration with Western and partner entities on technology-related projects and issues
Provide general technical support, referring issues to appropriate technology servicees unit
Travel to Western sites and locations to support educational technology initiatives
Program Administration
Represent Western and Outreach and Continuing Education at meetings
Provide support with assessment and planning activities
Collaborate with units across campus on special projects
Other Duties
Engage in university activities, service, and professional development; and
Other duties and projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree
Three years of experience in a field directly related to position responsibilities
Experience collaborating with diverse individuals and multiple ideas on projects
Demonstrated experience working independently and managing projects
Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated strong organizational and project management skills
Ability to work across sites and locations, including travel to/from Westerns sites
Technical and Professional Competencies
Demonstrated understanding of instructional design and development models and theories (e.g. ADDIE, Backward Design, Iterative Design)
Demonstrated competency with media production tools, methods, and techniques
Demonstrated familiarity with curriculum design and instructional methods
Demonstrated familiarity with course/learning management systems or training delivery systems (e.g. Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle)
Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technologies
Demonstrated development and implementation of innovative and creative project solutions and ideas
Demonstrated understanding of technology literacy
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree (preferred in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Adult Education, Technical Communication, or a related field)
Demonstrated experience in management or leadership
Demonstrated professional experience working in instructional design in a higher education setting
Demonstrated experience in media production in educational settings
Demonstrated familiarity with synchronous media-based solutions (e.g. Zoom, Skype for Business)
Demonstrated familiarity with additional tools used to support the teaching and learning process (e.g. Banner, Camtasia, Drupal, WordPress)
Demonstrated understanding of universal design and experience working with accessible technology and developing accessible media
Additional relevant materials demonstrating competency in one or more required or preferred competencies (e.g. ePortfolio, Developed Media, Professional Development Artifacts).
Salary: New hires typically begin at $4,577/month and includes an excellent benefits package
