Position overview / Statement of Work
  • The Digital Communications Designer assists the Public Affairs communications team with the development of visual communications that support the range of services and programs of the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD).
  • The resource will work as a member of a small team under the PWD Creative Director and the Senior Designer's direction.
  • The staff person will develop easy-to-read graphics for use in print and web collateral, including but not limited to bill stuffers, web banners, graphics for social media, advertisements, posters, and environmental graphics and displays for events.
  • Other work may include topical research and collaboration with subject matter experts to communicate technical information or processes through visual design.
  • The resource is responsible for design concepts, prototyping, and presenting in-progress work for review.
  • All work will maintain the Water Department's brand and visual identity.

Work activities:
  • Documentation of project requests, and meeting notes.
  • Research and gathering of look and feel precedents.
  • Use a combination of Adobe Creative Suite and hand sketches to generate concept drafts, design development, prototypes/mockups and presentations.
  • Illustration, photography, storyboards and/or editing as needed.
  • Edit and update existing graphic layouts and assets.
  • Generate and present creative concepts using team guidance.
  • Revise and create finished work using team input.
  • Take on typical design tasks (color correction, file prep).
  • Use feedback from other designers to revise work.

Skills/experience Required:
  • Completion of coursework in Graphic Design, User Experience, Motion Graphics or Animation.
  • Experience with design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Etc).
  • Understanding of visual communication elements (layout, type, image, and sequential media).
  • Teamwork skills.
  • A keen eye for detail.
  • A portfolio of relevant projects and/or course work. Process sketches are a plus.
  • Problem-solving aptitude.

Highly Desired/Preferred
  • Experience with Motion Graphics, Animation, and/or Video Editing.
  • Bilingual.
