Radnor A Better Chance

The Radnor Chapter of A Better Chance (ABC), a nationwide program providing educational opportunities for academically talented students of color, is seeking Resident Tutors/Mentors for the 2019-2020 academic year. Tutor would move in in July or August.

Our program, located in Wayne, PA houses 10 male and female students from across the country, as well as a resident director and three resident academic tutors.

This position provides a private room, board, and a stipend for 10 months, in exchange for part-time hours.

The job begins in late August and continues through the academic year. This position can be held with daytime employment or while attending graduate school.

Responsibilities Include:

--Tutoring in all academic areas. We especially need those with strong knowledge of high school math, science, writing, and Spanish.

--Supervising study hall Sunday - Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

--Participation in weekday dinners (6:00 – 7:00 PM).

--Supervising and “closing” the house at least one night a week.

--Supervising the house one weekend a month.

--Participating in and helping organize recreational house activities.

--Taking responsibility for fostering a family-like atmosphere in the house.

--Creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.

--Showing interest in the student’s extracurricular activities and interests by attending plays, sporting events, school functions, etc., whenever possible.

--Monitoring students' academic performance (through online grade access tools and student conferences).

--The tutors are expected to maintain an appropriate standard of behavior, demonstrating a respect for the integrity of each scholar and staff member, as well as a concern for the overall welfare of the program.

--Must live in the house.

Qualifications:

--College graduate (or graduating in Spring 2019/Winter 2020)

--Background in academic subject matter/tutoring

--Experience working with teenagers

--Maturity and the ability to enforce house rules

--Warmth and good interpersonal skills

--Car, driver’s license, and clean driving record a plus
