The Network Specialist/Network Engineer works as a team member of the Network Technology Group to monitor, support and troubleshoot the data network and related services at the University. This position’s primary focus is to resolve break/fix issues and complete new service requests in a timely manner, as well as participate with the scheduling and execution of upgrades to network devices. This would include meeting with technicians on-site to coordinate planned maintenance or meeting vendors to perform site surveys. This position may also provide Project Management to design, maintain and improve the University’s network architecture. This position will participate in an on-call rotation during non-business hours.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • For grade 9: 3 - 4 years of experience with wireless and ethernet network troubleshooting.
  • For grade 10: 5+ years of experience with wireless and ethernet network troubleshooting.
  • Training/certifications (such as CCNA, CWNA) preferred.
  • Customer facing technical support role requiring verbal and written communication with customers and using a ticketing system required
Job Qualifications
  • Programming or scripting using a common language such as Python is desirable
  • Managed network switch configuration, upgrade using common CLI commands. Understanding of layer 2 connectivity and concepts such as port configuration, VLANs, Trunking/LAG, and MAC addresses
  • Router configuration and basic routing concepts including subnets and subnet masks, next hop, routing tables and troubleshooting connectivity between subnets)
  • Wireless troubleshooting for coverage/performance issues using tools to assess signal strength, interference and client specific problems.
  • Basic firewall policy construction using source/destination addresses and ports and troubleshooting issues related to firewall policies
  • DNS configuration for basic records such as TXT, A, CNAME, PTR. Ability to use tools like “nslookup” and “host” to troubleshoot missing or incorrect information
  • DHCP configuration for subnets/address pools or reserved/fixed IP information
  • Client VPN concepts and troubleshooting connectivity issues
  • Familiarity with Network monitoring tools and concepts for monitoring performance, generating reports or alerts.
  • Packet capturing using tools like Wireshark
  • Experience with leading small to midsize projects required.
  • Managing and prioritizing assigned tickets using a trouble ticketing system
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize activities
  • Excellent customer service skills; tact and sensitivity in dealing with a diverse user community
  • Good written and oral communications skills required
