Position Title: Recreation and Environmental Educational Program Intern

Project Location: 100 Van Morgan Drive, Golden Pond, KY 42211

Position Summary: In partnership with the Mt. Adams Institute, the intern will be introduced to all aspects of a federal agency recreation and environmental education programs. This position will be able to build a resume of experience while completing important natural resource projects. The position will also have the opportunity to work with other aspects of natural resource management including wildlife, vegetation management, heritage, and business management.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):

1. Assist with developed recreation area maintenance, inspections and fee collection.

2. Work with operation of developed recreation facilities during periods of high visitation.

3. Engage local community members and military veterans in volunteer projects.

4. Plan and lead environmental education activities for K-12 students.

5. Assist with trails inspections and maintenance.

6. Assist with boundary maintenance and signage.

7. Reach out to underserved communities to assess recreation opportunity access.

8. Inspection of maintenance contract specifications to insure compliance.

9. Inspection of special use permit holders to insure compliance with the permits.

10. Complete a Community Action Project that is identified by the intern, researched, and implemented during the term of service.

11. Attend and complete all MAI/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.

12. Complete and submit all necessary MAI/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.

13. Wear an MAI uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.

Position Requirements:

1. Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation. Must comply with Driver Certification and Safety Agreement (see VetsWork Application Documents on website).

2. Attend a mandatory orientation in Dover, TN from 3/4 to 3/8 (food and lodging provided), intern trainings and intern meetings.

3. Desire to promote environmental stewardship to underserved communities.

4. Ability to drive a four wheel drive vehicle.

5. Ability to take the lead in development of programming for environmental education goals communicating to groups of different ages and educational backgrounds.

6. Ability and willingness to serve outdoors, in inclement weather, some evenings and weekends.

7. Ability to endure strenuous and repetitive physical activity involving lifting up to 50 lbs.

8. A cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a diverse team.

9. Meet other requirements of federal employee (e.g. background check, defensive driving, etc.)

10. Must have served in US Armed Forces and have a DD214 with an honorable discharge.

11. 21 years of age at beginning of service term.

12. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.

13. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.

14. Ability to commit to the full 45-week term of service.
