Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) with certification in MRI

and CT to serve our Veteran patients' needs at our William C.

Tallent VA Outpatient Clinic located in Knoxville, Tennessee.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesThe selected DRT will perform a variety of routine and complex

radiographic, MRI, and CT examinations. The incumbent is experienced

and certified to perform X-ray, CT, and MRI studies when required.

The incumbent will assist the radiologist/physician in fluroscopic

procedures as part of the diagnostic plan for patients. Specific

duties will include, but are not limited to:Functions (CT):

Practicing ALARA principles with an emphasis on image gently

image wisely in performance of required duties;

Playing an active role in the examination planning process

selecting the correct protocols;

Sending images to PACS, ensuring images are transmitted

successfully;

Performing basic patient physical examinations and review of

appropriate laboratory data, tailoring the examination and image

acquisition on a case-by-case basis. Tech will be required to

start IV lines, monitor vital signs, and acting as first

assistant to the physician in the performance of CT-guided

procedures;

Evaluating scans while in progress and notifying the radiologist

or referring physician of significant CT scans/angiography

studies requiring their immediate attention;

Preparing IV contract as necessary and injecting patients with

contrast media under supervision of a Radiology physician to

enhance tissue, lesions, etc.;

Advising radiologist of scan observations and notifying

radiologist of significant scans requiring immediate attention

or real-time visualization;

Preparing equipment for daily operation;

Functions (MRI):

- Interviewing patients before exam to determine if patient has a

contraindication for MRI;

- Functioning as an expert regarding software and hardware

capability and the performance of the MRI unit;

- Selecting proper pulse sequences to best determine the patients'

pathology;

- Maintaining highest quality patient supervision, monitoring

patients' conditions with specialized equipment keeping constant

check on vital signs and patients' comfort;

- Overseeing the maintenance of the MRI suite ensuring

cleanliness, proper mechanical operation, and execution of

infection control policy and maintenance of supply levels for

each exam;

- Monitoring the PACS system to ensure images are archiving and

transferring properly;

- Performing various venipuncture and injecting contrast material

for MRI exams as necessary;

- Making preliminary interpretations of exams to determine whether

exams illustrate diagnostic objectives;

- Modifying patients position if needed to fully illustrate

lesions or abnormalities;Function (General Radiology)

- Reviewing requests for appropriateness before performing exams;

- Performing the full spectrum of radiographic exams;

- Processing images using Digital radiography (DR), including

specific exposure requirements and digital post-processing

techniques to optimize image quality;

- Supporting radiologist in performance of fluroscopic exams such

as gastrointestinal studies, Fluoro guidance studies, and

swallowing evaluations;

- Preparing and administrating barium or other contrast agents,

starting IVs as needed for iodinated contrast exams. Observing

the patient for signs and symptoms of adverse contrast reactions

and initiating the appropriate response for varying levels of

severity.Work Schedule: This is a full-time position which is on a

compressed tour of duty that includes occasional Saturday coverage.

Tour of duty will be discussed during interview.

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements

Basic Requirements:

- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be

appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens

in accordance with VA Policy.

- Certification: All applicants must be certified in general

radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic

Technology (ARRT)(R). Advanced ARRT certification is required

for Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

(MRI)

- Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at

least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high

school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a

certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint

Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)

or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the

ARRT in radiology.

- English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in

spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and

7407(d)Preferred Experience:

- At least 2 years of recent CT experience performing a full range

of CT scan imaging to include CTA exams and cardiac calcium

scoring exams.

- CT post processing experience to include bone subtraction,

volume rendering, cardiac calcium measurement, etc.

- At least 2 years of recent MRI experience performing a full

range of MRI imaging exams.

- Advanced MRI Safety certification as an MRSO (MRSC).Grade Determinations:

1) GS-5 DRT (Entry Level)

- Experience or Education. None Beyond the basic requirements.

- Assignment. DRTs at this level operate and monitor commonly

used equipment performing routine procedures under normal

supervision. The technician functions somewhat independently in

carrying out these standardized procedures of limited

complexity. Deviations from regular procedures, unanticipated

problems, and unfamiliar situations are referred to the

supervisor for a decision or help. Some assignments at this

level also include developmental duties involving more complex

procedures designed to prepare the technician for promotion to

higher grades in a functional area. Such duties would be

performed under closer supervision.2) GS-6 DRT (Developmental level)

- Experience or Education: At least 1 year of experience

equivalent to the next lower grade level or the successful

completion of a 4-year baccalaureate degree program in

radiography or other directly related field to diagnostic

radiology/imaging

- Assignment: Employees at this grade level serve as

developmental DRTs, performing examinations which are routine

and standardized in nature. They explain exams to patients in

terms they can understand as well as potential hazards. They

also must troubleshoot equipment used for diagnostic radiology

and exercise extreme caution in the handling and safeguarding of

all radiation producing equipment. DRTs must report major

equipment malfunctions within a timely manner to service

representatives, and assist higher graded technicians in

performing more complicated examinations.3) GS-7 DRT (Advanced Development Level)

- Experience or education: At least 1 year of experience

equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the

clinical competencies described at that level or the successful

completion of 1 full academic year of graduate education leading

to a degree program in radiography or other directly related

field to diagnostic radiology/imaging. Education may relate to

the duties of a specific position or to the occupation, but must

be appropriate for the position being filled.

- Assignment: DRTs at this level perform a substantially full

range of duties but receive guidance and directions regarding

unfamiliar or unusual situations for more complex patient

issues. Candidates at this grade level may be qualified to

provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology

and/or general radiologic technology services.

- Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to

the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the

following KSAs: 1. Knowledge of the technical adequacy of the

digital image, including the ability to adjust the image quality

in the digital system; 2. Knowledge of different contrast

material required for the requested study; 3. Knowledge of

radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure

techniques, appropriate beam limitation to anatomical area, and

employing lead shielding when performing standard or

fluoroscopic procedures; 4. Knowledge of the function of

computed radiography, Phosphor cassettes and CR readers; and 5.

Knowledge of PACS, and basic computer skills.4) GS-8 DRT (Full Performance Level)

- Experience: At least 1-year of experience equivalent to the

next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical

competencies described at that level

- Assignments: Employees at this grade level serve as staff

DRTs at the full performance level. Candidates at this grade

level are to be qualified to provide services in specialized

areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic

technology services.

- Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Inaddition to

the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the

following KSAs: 1. Ability to check system for operation and

assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines;

2. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make

adjustments as needed; 3. Knowledge of patient's clinical

record, diagnosis, and laboratory results; 4. Ability to monitor

patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the

radiologist informed; 5. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and

courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff,

family, visitors, and volunteers; and 6. Knowledge of anatomy

and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual

images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate

areas of interest.5) GS-9 DRT

- Experience: At least 1-year of experience equivalent to the

next lower grade level directly related to the position being

filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at

that level.

- Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance

level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant

scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be

performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at

this grade level may be appointed to one of the following

assignments:

- Advanced DRT. Employees at this level are fully

functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out

their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may

have varying assignments including special and complex

radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the

specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope

and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities

to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the

technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the
