Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join us at a large scale Federal program working as part of a high performing technical team, providing Monitoring and Automation services within our End User Technology Services group.

Working closely with our operational, project and engineering teams, your role will ensure that the infrastructure and service monitoring environment is maintained and tuned in order to provide data driven alerting, event management and dashboards. Coupled with this, you will work within our Automation and Scripting team to improve services through the use of scripting and automation.

In this role your responsibilities span the following:

  • Leading a team that provides ongoing support and maintenance of Monitoring and Automation toolsets along with the on boarding of new services and automation projects in a multi-vendor environment,
  • Managing configuration of alerts, including alert escalations and automated responses to alerts (self-healing),
  • Champion and undertake the creation of dashboards and reports,
  • Have the ability to respond to and prioritise competing and often urgent requests in a calm and efficient manner while also maintaining high work standards;
  • Drive the evolution of Infrastructure automation and influence decisions for core infrastructure initiatives,
  • Strong understanding of ITIL processes for incident, problem, and change management,
  • Build strong working relationships with key stakeholders both internally and within the customers organisation, and provide guidance to ensure complex ICT problems are solved,
  • Eliciting, understanding and designing against both business and technical requirements,
  • Provide 3rd level and deep-dive investigation resolutions into active incidents,
  • Partake in Continual Service Improvement planning and activities, including working with the operations team to create and drive automation initiatives,
  • Experience managing Wintel and/or Linux operating systems is mandatory
  • Experience in Scripting (e.g. SQL, PowerShell, Go, Perl) is mandatory
  • Mentoring and working with other team members,
  • As a senior member of the team, possess the ability to work independently with limited supervision,
  • Foster a positive culture within the team aligned with Agency values; and
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

This role will require a high level of technical expertise across a broad range of technologies, so you’ll enjoy a large degree of variety in this role.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have good overall Wintel experience and a good working knowledge of the Microsoft technology stack (PowerShell), Cloud Services, and VMware.

You have a passion and drive for System Monitoring and Automation when it comes to infrastructure and services - not just how to do it, but how it can benefit the business to become that internal evangelist.

Your personal and professional attributes will include strong leadership and organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across all levels and to influence key stakeholders.

You also possess the following skills:

  • 7+ years of experience as a Senior Systems Engineer at a large organisation where you worked on large and complex systems,
  • Experience implementing, managing, and tuning System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) – Essential,
  • Experience with some of the following tools (or similar):
    • vRealize Operations Manager, ServiceNow, SharePoint, Grafana, MS SQL, REST APIs and the Elastic Stack,

  • Proven experience in formulating monitoring approaches, using data to drive decisions, implementing automation in production environments,
  • Understanding of data mapping and service aggregation techniques would be highly desirable,
  • Strong understanding / experience with DevOps, Automaton or Infrastructure as Code,
  • Proven experience with improving systems performance and advancing automation,
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerShell and other scripting technologies,
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services,
  • Strong problem solving skills,
  • Highly effective in managing multiple concurrent activities, while understanding and managing priorities, dependencies and risk,
  • Have a collaborative approach using a consultative, influencing style that promotes continuous improvement,
  • Have an Agile mindset and experience with both Waterfall and Agile delivery,
  • Ability to analyse and troubleshoot complex software and infrastructure issues, and develop tools/systems for task automation,
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement /management skills, and
  • A related qualification, and certifications in ITIL and Project Management are highly desirable.

Additional Information

This role does require the successful applicant to be an Australian Citizen and hold a current baseline security clearance.
