We are seeking several teachers for a growing K-10th grade private school in Northwest Austin.
Formal classroom teaching experience and/or certification is NOT required. We will train the right person. Some of the best teachers we've had did not have prior experience when they first joined our school.
The school is a tight knit community where the students have the same teacher for several years. We're progressive, weird, and a little crunchy. Our method is similar to Montessori, but not quite as student-directed, and our school is tailored to gifted learners. We use a global history-based, hands-on curriculum.
ALL teachers are generalists and teach more than 1 subject, so you must be comfortable teaching at least one cluster of subjects (e.g., humanities) to apply.
The most important qualifications are:
You LOVE kids (We can't overstate this.)
Patience (Your first instinct isn't to yell if you're having trouble getting the class's attention.)
Flexibility (If a lesson plan isn't going well, you can think on your toes.)
Creativity (You can devise a fun math game or figure out how to make a history lesson hands-on.)
Positivity (We're looking for someone the kids will be happy to be around.)
Strong work ethic (You understand that teaching often exceeds the normal 8 hours a day.)
Emotional intelligence (You can read the room.)
Empathy (If a kid or teen is upset, you don't brush it off. You dignify their feelings.)
A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required, and you must have some work or volunteer experience with children or teens. Tutoring, leading a drama club, student teaching, etc all count towards the experience requirement.
