A letter to pawnbrokers in Austin and surrounding areas

Austin is a fast growing city and Texas is a fast growing state, so why is it our industry doesnt value the knowledge of experienced pawnbrokers? Why does consolidation mean lower wages and layoffs for long-term employees who have given years of service to a company, helping it grow? The Bottom line is it shouldnt. The hard truth is when companies merge out of financial need vs. synergies or the good of the business landscape, employees and customer service are the two things that suffer the most.

At Top Cash Pawn we operate in a different way. We are a local business that has been in Austin for over 35 years. Unlike the large chains and even most of the small operators, we own all of the land our stores sit on. We own the shopping centers so our rents dont go up and we dont cut employees pay. Our average employee has been here over 7 years. We operate like a large company with a small company feel. We put our employees and customers first. We have a vision for the Pawn Business and we have no intention of letting loose of that vision.

Starting Employees here make a 6% commission on every dollar they sell everyday; they are guaranteed a min of $13.00 per hour just to start. Assistants make $16.00 to $20.00 per hour and a 1st assistant even more.

Managers are paid like partners, because they are. They receive a salary and 12% commission based on both sales and interest collected for the entire store! Managers at Top Cash Pawn make from $50k to $80k, maybe thats why our managers are the most loyal in the industry.

We are at the end of this business cycle and our industry can really benefit. When the economy slows, and it always does, our industry thrives. When the food-trucks and scooter rentals slow down, we will be here serving our community. Just walk into a Top Cash Pawn and you will see the difference.

When we promote at Top Cash Pawn we do so based on: Performance, Reliability, and Experience. Notice that Performance was first on that list and Experience was last. If you want a chance for rapid advancement in an environment where you know you are making a direct impact to the bottom line, stop wasting your time with a job. If you want to be somewhere you are valued and it is proven with actions not words, then stop wasting your time with a job. If you love the pawn business and intend to be in it for the long term, you owe it to yourself to be somewhere you can have a career and not a job. You know you are on the wrong team.

Even if you are not currently in this industry but would like to be and think you could make an impact on our team, we are looking for 6 special people.

If you have a Pawn Shop Employee License and come here for 90 days, we will give you a $400.00 bonus. If you are new to the industry, we will give you $300.00 once you receive your license. We are a serious group, and we love what we do, so we are careful about the candidates we add to our team. You need to be able to pass a drug screen and background check, but we pay for all of that!

If you are a manager, assistant manager or entry-level employee of a pawnshop in the Austin area, or if you think this industry speaks to you and you would like to talk confidentially about joining our team. Please email David Barney at dbarney.austin@gmail.com.

We need serious inquiries only. You may send a resume but it is not necessary. We will make a decision based on an initial phone contact and then an in-person interview. We are looking for 6 people to join (3 north and 3 south) us as we continue growing and servicing Austin for decades to come.
