The Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) provides safe, quick clearance of incidents that affect traffic, including crash scene's and disabled vehicles. The primary purpose of HERO is to ensure the patrolled roadways are free of obstructions and safe for the traveling public throughout the Austin District. To increase safety, HERO Operators wear highly visible, reflective uniforms and drive specially marked vehicles when providing assistance to motorists and emergency first responders.

This is a position that will require weekend work (Sat and Sun) 7am-7pm and a few shifts during the week. You will be operating a truck and trailer combination along side another team member, removing debris from the interstate and/or setting up Long Term Maintenance of Traffic. This position will require on-call times during the overnight hours as needed. CDL is not required but successfully completing a DOT physical will be mandatory.

Upon successful completion of classroom and field training, each HERO will be certified as a first responder to operate a fully equipped Highway Emergency Response Vehicle. CPR / First Aid training is provided to enable the HERO Operator to provide basic first aid until emergency services arrive when necessary. Specific duties include but not limited to:

-Monitor roadways with regard to vehicle crashes, disabled/abandoned vehicles, debris, lane-closing events, traffic signal malfunctions, damage to state equipment on state roadways, as well as general incident/congestion scenarios.

-Provides roadside assistance to stranded motorists (including changing tires, giving battery jumps, providing fuel, water to an overheating engine, removing debris from the travel lanes, etc.)

-Will operate a utility bed truck hauling a cage style trailer and/or an enclosed style trailer.

-Will provide debris removal from the shoulders and long-term Maintenance of Traffic service to the interstate system

-Work closely with Law Enforcement and other first responders at highway incidents.

-Provide incident response, on-scene traffic control and limited first aid as needed

-Provide Traffic Incident Management Services

-Accepts personal responsibility of all work output

-Adheres to all HERO Standard Operating Procedure guidelines.

-Utilize a two-way radio and/or smart phone to communicate and coordinate with the Traffic Management Center staff with regard HERO work activities.

-While providing emergency roadside service to motorist, Operators will observe safety required procedures to avoid injury and accidents at all times.

-Required to carry 20-50LBS on a constant basis

-Will work on the interstate system alongside vehicles traveling in access of 70 MPH

-HERO Operators are subject to working in all types of weather conditions, 24/7/365, holidays, weekends, required overtime, and call outs due to identified emergencies.

- Will work 8-12 hour shifts, weekends, and on-call when needed

-This is a Contract Position with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
