SUMMARY

Under direction, the main purposes of this position are to troubleshoot and repair mechanical problems of automotive vehicles, including heavy equipment, and perform other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Analyzes malfunctions and determines solutions for repairs and overhauls to equipment including automobiles, trucks, golf carts, pumps, compressors, emergency fire pumps, pneumatic tools, and heavy equipment such as locomotive, cranes, loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, and forklifts.

Plans work procedure using charts, technical manuals, and experience.

Raises vehicles using hydraulic jack or hoist.

Removes units such as engines, transmissions, and differentials.

Disassembles units and inspects parts for wear using micrometers, calipers, and thickness gauges.

Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.

Overhauls, repairs, or replaces engines, carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, pumps, and air conditioning units.

Rewires -ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.

Relines and adjusts brakes.

Repairs or replaces shock absorbers.

Solders leaks in cooling systems.

Pressure checks and inspects radiators.

Replaces and adjusts headlights.

Installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.

Travels to vendor sites to evaluate equipment prior to purchase, and makes recommendations.

Confers with vendors, and prices, orders, expedites, and receives parts.

Performs on-call duties.

Assumes lead role when Mechanical Maintenance Technicians, Classes A and B, assist.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

HR/GED required, plus 10 years of mechanical experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Skilled in conducting effective and confident oral and written communications and working with varied personalities. Reason through complex problems under pressure; operate heavy equipment; and use hand tools and safety gear and equipment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Class C Operators License.

Tasks involve the ability to exert a high degree of physical effort including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and the lifting (up to 100 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials. Tasks involve the ability to work in confined spaces, such as but not limited to generators, transformers, breakers, tanks, wire vaults, scrubber modules, boiler, precipitator, vessels, etc. Tasks involve the ability to work in areas of excessive height, such as but not limited to 400-foot stack, 100-foot ball field lights, support structure beams, switchyard structures, manlifts, scrubber module structures, boiler structures, precipitator structures, vessel structures, etc. and to climb to those locations with the necessary tools and safety equipment.
