We need an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. The Veterinary Anesthesia Technician III, under supervision by Veterinary Anesthesia Technician IV, assists in the provision of clinical support to veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary patient care and anesthesia services. May serve as senior technician or the intermediate supervisor to veterinary technician staff within anesthesia service group or shift. Oversees maintenance of the physical area with the anesthesia service. This position also includes the development, implementation and evaluation of quality care to patients. The Anesthesia Technician III Floor Supervisor will focus on 3 primary areas of activity: clinical, educational, and managerial. The ideal candidate assists in the provision of clinical support to veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary patient care and anesthesia services. You will also perform the duties required to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Associate’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or related area or equivalent education and experience.

Six years of technical experience in veterinary medicine, anesthesia, or related field.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Intermediate computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and billing entry through VMIS.

Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as but not limited to: anesthesia machines, fluid pumps, multi-parameter monitoring equipment, blood gas analyzers, CO2 monitors, anesthesia ventilator, anesthesia monitoring equipment, defibrillators, and other equipment required for anesthetic management of veterinary patients.

Strong animal handling skills, and positioning of patients for surgical procedures.

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to communicate professional, effectively, and positively at all levels within the anesthesia service and the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital.

Must be able to work within time constraints and in a crisis situation.

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.

Requires working different shifts and participating in On-Call coverage. Participates in emergency duty coverage during veterinary student absences and for holidays.

May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on-call duty”.

Ability to perform heavy lifting or moving.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or related area or equivalent education and experience.

Specialty Training in anesthesia or related area.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Current Texas license and continuing education hours necessary to maintain license or ability to obtain one within six months of employment.

Basic & Advanced CPR certification through RECOVER.

Active specialization through Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia (AVTAA) and/or Certificate Course in Principle Techniques of Small Animal Anesthesia, Perioperative Analgesia & Critical Care or attendance of advanced anesthesia courses via Texas A& M Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Advanced computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, VMIS record and charge entry.

Advanced understanding of equipment used in the veterinary anesthesia setting of a teaching hospital.

Advanced knowledge of anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, multi-parament monitoring equipment, ventilators, blood gas analyzers, CO2 monitors, defibrillators, and other equipment require for teaching and performing anesthetic management of veterinary patients.

Salary: CommensurateResponsibilities:

Assumes intermediate supervisory authority for and trains subordinate veterinary technical staff, student technicians, and student workers assigned within the anesthesia service section. May be required to assign personnel emergency duty shift schedules and work assignments. May assist with job performance evaluations for assigned staff. Acts as liaison with supervisor on personnel matters affecting moral, job efficiency, and clinical primary care of hospitalized animals. Develops and implements standard operating procedures in collaboration with Veterinary Anesthesia Technician IV that comply with good laboratory practices.

Assists faculty, residents, interns, and students with patient care. Facilitates the instruction of professional curriculum veterinary medical students with an emphasis on clinical anesthesia techniques. Instructs and assists veterinary students in designing anesthetic protocols. Assists students in inducing and maintaining anesthesia in a variety of animal species. Performs and assists students in simple catheterization techniques, and the administration of pre-medicants, induction agents, inhalant anesthetics and appropriate analgesics. Assists students and/or staff in preparing patients for surgical procedures to include proper clipping and aseptic surgical site preparation. Monitors or assists students in proper anesthesia recovery techniques. Assists with critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed Provides physical restraint for safe handling of multiple species of patient animals. Assists the DICTC anesthesia department if needed. Assist in training of and acts as mentor to newly hired Veterinary Anesthesia Technicians I & II. Works closely with the Veterinary Anesthesia Supervisor in all aspects of training the new employee, and updating the experienced/trained employee with newer methods, policies and procedures in small animal anesthesia. Facilitates cross-training of existing employees in other services of the hospital after a minimum of six months of employment. Arranges coverage to allow cross-training in other services. Assists the Veterinary Anesthesia Supervisor with case evaluations and performance feedback for the staff in the small animal anesthesia department. Assists with providing information on external training needs available from the university, including seminars recommended to attend, and continuing education program. Assists technicians with creation of in-services and rounds discussions pertinent to anesthesia. Participates in continuing education seminars. Provides instruction on CPR and defibrillation.

Ensures that all charges generated from Anesthesia Services are captured and correctly entered into the hospital information system (VMIS). Assists with organizing and maintaining the Anesthesia Service scheduling system and share duties with the Veterinary Technician III Coordinator as main scheduler. Ensures anesthetic cases are worked up, approved in a timely manner by the anesthesiologist and supplies needed are pulled and locked in cubex until the case begins. Reviews Anesthetic records and pharmacy slips for accuracy and completeness. Records or assists students in recording patients’ physiological data and all medications given on Anesthesia Records. Coordinate patient anesthesia schedules, check pre-ops work ups, administer pre-op and induction medications, intubate and maintain an appropriate level of sedation of anesthesia. Prepare various samples for diagnostic testing. Ability to monitor different inhalant anesthetic gases using a precision vaporizer. Independently develop anesthetic protocols and calculate and administer medications. Recognition and management of perianesthetic cardiac arrhythmias, perianesthetic disturbances in blood electrolyte, and/or acid- base homeostasis, and perioperative pain and assistance in pain therapy. Knowledge of high flow/low flow anesthesia. Familiarization with injectable and inhalant anesthesia.

Provides primary and back-up Anesthesia emergency call in the small and large animal hospitals on a regular basis.

Ensures that the proper equipment is available to facilitate patient safety. Maintains and operates point of care laboratory equipment. Maintains and operates patient monitoring equipment. Arranges for Anesthesia Service equipment maintenance when necessary. Maintains accountability and creates logs for inventory control of capital equipment within the service area and assumes responsibility for performing regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on hospital capital equipment items. Obtain quotes for maintenance and/or repairs.

Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service area. Restocks supplies, drugs, and solution. Cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service area. Provides infectious disease control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working environment. Completes tasks in a timely manner.Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis and Licensure
